Went to a job to restretch. (I didn't fit it) Turns out the carpet was like the sea all downstairs! Customer has UFH throughout. Carpet is 80/20 twist with hessian back and has been stretched fitted over a 85lb normal rubber underlay. It has been down for about 6 years and bubbles started 12/18 months ago. Floor is concrete.
I've now been asked to price up for complete new carpet and underlay. I've fitted over ufh hearing before and I know I need to keep tog rating down. My issue is why would the last carpet have failed so bad here? I obviously don't want the same to happen to me.
    Any advice?
    Cheers

Not an expert in carpet by any means, but I would be asking what changed after 4 and a half years without problems that caused the bubbles to appear?

I did ask and they said nothing... No use of wheelchairs/zimmer frames. One room had a computer chair which done damage as expected.

The chair won't help. It will gradually weaken that specific area which could lose the overall stretch in other areas. Hessian backing may of reacted slightly to heat, spillages of any kind wouldn't help either. Perhaps with the new installation use roma underlay or similar that is designed for ufh.

    Is the carpet brittle ?

Why hasn't it been fitted on underlay that's suitable for ufh?

Something changed. Otherwise, this wouldn't have happened. Cause & effect.

    Austin,
This is not the only underlay for this purpose. Cloud 9 Radiance & Floorwise Thermaflow to name two others, and these's more. Ball & Young, Tredaire........

Have you something constructive to add about the cause of the problem, or just the sales pitch?

Check tog ratings and use radiance, had similar situation with de lam ( not my work) replaced with ufh underlay as was fitted on cosi 10mm which just caused sweating and baked the underlay. Customer wasn't impressed with the cushion effect of ufh underlays...... My opinion is ufh is wasted on carpets and far better for ceramic/lvt finishes but when you have a new build with 500m2 you can't pick and choose where to have the heating. Just do as the manufacturer recommends and take there advice and ignore the customers moans. If they don't seem happy with what the manufacturer recommends walk away and let someone else deal with it

Andy, true the underlays you mention are suitable for UFH, but they weren't specifically designed for just UFH - as mentioned...

No, i don't have anything constructive to add about cause of the problem - because I'm more interested in coming up with a constructive solution to solve the problem to make a happy customer :).

sorry for digressing from the topic here folks!!

    Nothing constructive, interesting.

Smudger26 is asking why it happened:

" My issue is why would the last carpet have failed so bad here? I obviously don't want the same to happen to me.
    Any advice?"

Does it matter that yours is designed specifically for UFH if the others if they are also all suitable for UFH? Getting a suitable underlay is the easy part isn't it?

So now we've established that it's simply a sales pitch, and that your underlay isn't the only game in town, go ahead, sell it.

Why is your underlay better then any or all of the rest?

I'm not on here to sell... I'm on here to help.

Choosing the correct underlay is seriously important to prevent any future problems.

Check out the data sheets - numbers speak for themselves
