    What is an Apprenticeship?
    An apprenticeship is a combination of working, studying and earning a wage. Each apprenticeship programme is different. Generally, you will attend a college from 1 day a week, every week, or on block release every other month for up to 5 days at a time. The apprentice will also work 30 hours per week for their employer. You will work alongside your employer who will provide ‘on the job’ training and pay you an agreed salary. The work element of an apprenticeship is a real job; therefore you will need to be ready for employment and demonstrate professionalism at all times.

    FloorSkills Apprenticeships


    FloorSkills Funded apprenticeships are open to anyone of any age and any experience level. FloorSkills apprenticeships offer up to 30 days practical training at the training centre located in Solihull, near Birmingham. FloorSkills apprenticeships work on block release every other month. FloorSkills opted for this type of apprenticeship over 1 day per week apprenticeships as we feel it is impossible for an apprentice to attend for only 1 day per week and be able to complete a full installation. FloorSkills apprentices have to prepare their own area and see through the whole process of what they are learning each time they visit FloorSkills. WE DO NOT pre-prepare areas or part install areas for the students; hence we need more than 1 day at a time with the apprentice. The FloorSkills apprenticeship runs over a period of 18 months, the first 12 months (approximately) will be at the FloorSkills Training Centre undertaking practical training. After approximately 12 months the apprenticeship moves onto the on-site assessment phase.

    FloorSkills has two types of Apprenticeships to choose from-

    · Textile & Impervious Flooring
    · Wood Flooring
    (Please see schedules below for what the apprentice will be covering while at the training centre)

    Apprentices work towards gaining the following Qualifications-

    · Level 2 NVQ Diploma
    · Level 2 Technical Certificate
    · Level 1 Functional Skills Certificates (Textile & Impervious apprenticeship only)
    · Employer Rights and Responsibilities Certificate
    · PLTS Certificate

    Apprenticeship Funding and how it works


    FloorSkills has two different funding options available, depending on which apprenticeship you decide suits you best (Textile & Impervious Floorcoverings OR Wood Flooring) Please note that to claim Funding / Grants the apprentice has to be
    EMPLOYED

    Textile & Impervious Apprenticeship Funding –
    FloorSkills will help apply for funding to cover training costs for apprentices. This is paid directly to the organisation that provides and supports the apprenticeship - in most cases the learning provider.

    The criteria for funding depends on their sector , age of the candidate and previous qualifications:

    Aged- 16 to 18 - 100% of cost paid (Full Funding)
    Aged- 19 to 24 - 50% of cost paid (Part Funding)
    Aged- 25 + 25% of cost paid (Part Funding)

    Previous Qualifications Limit For CARPET / VINYL Funding – (MUST NOT HAVE)


    · BTEC HNC/HND
    · NVQ Level 4 or above (in any other trade)
    · Foundation Degree
    · Teaching Qualification / PGCE


    Employers may also be eligible for a £1,500 apprenticeship grant on top of the training grant (see above) for use towards travel costs , hotel expenses etc.

    Wood Flooring Apprenticeship Funding –
    FloorSkills will help apply for your grant to fully cover the cost of the apprenticeship training while at FloorSkills. (Full Funding)
    The grant is available for registered CITB companies (FloorSkills will help you become CITB registered). The grant is available for ANY AGE group. The Funding / Grant is paid directly to the employer one quarter in arrears, the training provider will invoice the employer direct the course fees on a monthly basis.

    The criteria for funding depends on their sector, age of the candidate and previous qualifications:

    ANY AGE GROUP 100% of cost paid (Full Funding)

    Previous Qualifications Limit For WOOD FLOORING Funding – (MUST NOT HAVE)

    · 2x NVQ Level 2
    · 1x NVQ Level 3 or above

    Employers may also be eligible for an additional apprenticeship grant on top of the training grant (see above) for use towards travel costs , hotel expenses etc. The apprentice has to be over the age of 19 for the additional grant.

    Apprenticeship Schedule *

    Textile & Impervious Apprenticeship


    · Week 1 (3 Days) - Induction, H+S, ERR, Subfloor Preparation
    · Week 2 (2 Days) - Textile Installation
    · Week 3 (4 Days) - LVT Installation
    · Week 4 (4 Days) - Textile Installation
    · Week 5 (5 Days) - Safety Flooring, Cushion Flooring, Functional Skills
    · Week 6 (2 Days) - Quotes, Customer Relations, Building Construction
    · Week 7 (4 days) - End tests (Practical and online)
    · Up to 6 Additional days training if required.
    · OSAT – Onsite assessment process commences.
    · Complete

    Wood Flooring Apprenticeship

    · Week 1 (4 Days) - Induction, H+S, ERR, Subfloor Preparation
    · Week 2 (2 Days) - Strip, Plank Installation
    · Week 3 (3 Days) - Wood Block (Herringbone), Border Work Installation
    · Week 4 (3 Days) - Estimating, Wood Science, Bespoke Design Work
    · Week 5 (2 Days) - Sports Floors Installation
    · Week 6 (4 Days) - Sand + Seal , Floor Repairs, Finishes
    · Week 7 (2 Days) - Stairs Installation
    · OSAT – Onsite assessment process commences
    · (Additional site visits will be carried out through the apprenticeship)


    *Please note that the Schedule is a guide only. Different Apprenticeship groups can run at different speeds dependent on previous experience an apprentice might have. Due to this the schedule ‘may’ change to suit the apprentice’s speed and skill levels. Apprenticeship groups may also change as we try to merge apprentices into groups with similar speed and skill levels.

    Matt,

    As I mentioned in another post, my middle son, may be joining me and Charlie soon. He is likely to leave school, with no qualifications at all.
    How will that effect him attending this course ?
    I know when Charlie was with you, he had to bring in his GCSE results.
    He won`t be leaving school until, early-mid next year (hopefully !)

    If I had an apprentice I'd snap up a place for him. Having been through it myself I know he'd get the best training available

    Not a problem Neil.

    In simple terms, the better their Engilsh and Maths grades the less paperwork for me. But its not about me, its about the apprentices, bit more paperwork my end is not a issue (i simply pass on paperwork to the clever people in the office) so as above NO Problem !

    Thanks Trimmer,

    You will have to pay us a visit if passing. The training centre has had a MASSIVE face lift and doubled in size. If you think it was good before, well its in another league now.

    lol, like most of the lads we have then. Charlie was a pleasure to have (wish they all was like him) . I seem to get the idea that his brother will be a pain in the arse?

    No worries tho, extra English and Maths training soon gets the naughty boys being pleasant young installers LOL. :thumbs

    Hi matt

    Ive got my brother whos 20 he mighnt be interested in doing the apprenticeship, how much will i have to pay towards his course? he has already done a college course in sports science will this affect his chance for an apprenticeship?

    Does the apprentice have to be under 18 throughout the traning for full funding or just from the start date? Really want to get some1 on the carpet and vinyl apprenticeship asap. Is it still fully funded?

    You should try that KFC near you mate, they sure can't cook hot wings....maybe they would be better at flooring. :)

    As long as 18 on the start day he will be fully funded for whole course.

    What is the consensus on retraining at 39 ? lol. I'm just north of Edinburgh......Is the wood apprenticeship still available North of the border ?
