Hi. I hope I'm posting this in the right forum. I'm pulling up carpets and just the one room has felt like material underneath and is glued to the hard wood floorboards with what looks like tar. Does anyone know what this is and why it would have been used? Thank you.

Looks like a felt interlay. Used to stop dirt and old adhesive bleeding through to your carpet

Or it could be bitumen backed sisal kraft paper to stop the damp coming up
