Hey, I'm a customer with what I believe to be a poor install and want advice.

I had a leak in a room where I had layed 33sqm of solid wood floor about 10 years before. It buckled and needed replacing so went through insurance. They told me to get two quotes..... I wanted to replace with an LVT instead of solid wood floor. They picked the cheapest quote and I booked the guy in.

He rips old floor up including skirting and lays all the new floor in a day... quick work I thought. I was at work and the whole lot was done when I wasn't their. Now the sub floor is 1st floor concrete type, built in 2005, he told me he had a bit of a job getting it up.

When I came to inspect it, there was dust everywhere, crap all up the stairs etc... Wasn't very happy as I think a tradesman should do a half decent job of clearing up. Anyway, I then noticed 2 soft spots in floor about 10cm in diameter. I let the guy know and he came and fixed them. This then got me thinking... Why were there soft spots, only a hole in the concrete would cause this. I looked at the old floor he had ripped up and there were concrete bits all over it. So had he filled these holes in? How had he fixed the soft spots so quickly and what with (done in a few hours if that). When I was back at property a few days later I noticed a couple if high spots... It was close to the edge of a kitchen cupboard so decided to pull it up and have a look. What I could see underneath was old adhesive which hadn't been removed (about 4mm high) and two holes in floor which hadnt been filled. This got me really mad - felt like I could have done a better job myself.

I have contacted they guy and he is coming back to take floor up and make sure any holes are filled in properly and all old glue is removed etc. The flooring being layed is a Quickstep Pulse Click. Ideally an slc would have been put down but it wasn't and existing floor was deemed to be good enough.

What are people's opinions on this? What should the holes be filled with? I think it's a really bad job - it's basic stuff to clean and prep a subfloor sufficiently before laying new. Please see pics attached. [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

Did you agree to prep work, was their prep work quoted at the beginning ?

Nothing was mentioned in the quote but also didn't know what the floor would be like so how could he? Either way, just because it hasn't been quoted surely you shouldn't just continue regardless? He's taken some old glue off and filled some holes but not all of them!

Not being funny. But if your ripping up solid wood you should know (fitter) that would of been glued down to subfloor. The fitter was lucky it wasn't fully bonded . Looks dot and dabbed. I prefer full bond. So he should of said it will need SLC. But also that solid wood floor I'm surprised it last that long glued to that type of subfloor.

OK, so if we pretend d that the floor is level and flat except for the holes which have been created by the ripping up of old. What should I be expecting my fitter to be doing with the holes?

There's always going to be some sort of prep work involved in this particular job, agree with diesel.

It would be mad to think you can uplift a stuck down wood floor and lay lvt clic without and floor prep. Should always level the floor first. If it comes up clean and the floor is dead flat those holes/low spots should of been skimmed with repair compound at the very least.
