Listen it's a balancing act at times. If you get plenty of work from this firm then you need to do the job. I know it's against good practice but I'm afraid feeding the family comes first .

 

In the unlikely event that the job should fail it's highly unlikely it will go to court . It's just not worth it.

 

Ive never heard of 1 fitter being took to court over a job that has gone wrong through my whole time in floorlaying.
Theres always stories about 'it happened to someone I know' 'it happened to a mate of mine' 'it happened to....'
Ahhhh well Guess I may be in court one day then but up to now ive got away with it, shoot me down, curse me to death....im just being honest. You meet too many fitters these days that think they are the Undisputed heavyweight of the flooring world and never do anything wrong

Your right we've all done things we shouldn't and have got away with it or not as the case may be. On this occasion it did happen to my mate, work colleague whatever you want to call him. He'd be the first to tell you himself about it. Worked for Prestige flooring in Altrincham, had to fit flooring in a Church. Went totally wrong. Prestige took him to court and won even though he fitted it how they asked. Madness. Just because you've never heard of a fitter being taken to court it doesn't mean that it doesn't happen or won't happen.

A massive change in attitudes on this forum.
Around a year or so ago, the poster would have been shot down in flames before he could press "return".
Amazed at how many like to see the way the wind is blowing before giving their opinions these days.

 

Thats a ****ty thing to do to the fitter in my book, you dont tell him to fit it wrong then when it goes wrong throw the book at him and make him sort out your original mess, id be spreading that firms name like wildfire amongst everyone I knew warning them what they are like for doing that to me.

Im quite lucky in regards to this as if im ever asked to do something that shouldnt be done then I get it in an email that they have asked me to proceed and they assume responsibility, never been collared for anything in 3 years where that was agreed, and they are the first to complain chase you if there is a fitter error, might start putting on invoice as an extra 'fitted as temporary floorcovering' though.

 

Thing is sid as you know. We all want to do things the right way but at times it don't happy. Mostly due to cost.
I fitted Van Gogh straight to laminate a few years back for a friend. Told her it's a big gamble. It is still down an no movement. Not the way I do things but helped her out. Karndean off eBay too lol

I know we can't always do every job by the book, but when I have suggested that in the past I've been feckin crucified on here (even banned for a short time). How times have changed. Just sayin!

 

It not a question about doing a job properly if you compound over a vinyl soon that becomes normal practice then they start telling you to do something else you think is wrong...
If people said there is absolutely no way I could compound over that vinyl because it would fail customers would have no choice but to pay to have it done the right way
I seriously let so many jobs go if they don't want it done properly
I want the rep of he's expensive but he does everything spot on
Not he done my kitchen and funked it right up only takes one bad job to ruin your rep

 

Very true which is why if it was my own job then I wouldnt do it because then it could only fall back on me. If the firm gives me the instruction to do so then I do it.

 

Got asked to work for them a while back. They supply Bole floor so I was super tempted, just for that reason. Something just didn't feel right thought so i ducked. Really glad I did now. That's a 2wats trick!

 

Re fitting to a substandard.....
Wouldn't it depend on who your taking instruction from as in who is the client, fitters client. Is it a layperson who has no or very limited knowledge of the trade and there for the tradesman is honour bound to do the job correctly and to the correct standard. If the client is in the trade and therefore deemed an expert and instructs the fitter to doing it a certain way even if they know it to be substandard, surely the courts have to take this into account when deciding who is a fault.
The fitter would still need to safeguard himself by getting his fitting instructions in writing, if not the correct fitting should be the default position.
Why do you think the likes of carpetright will not take payment for fitting? So as to distance themselves from fitting problems, I.e. you payed the fitter its his fault we only act as an agent for him.

 

Iv done some work for prestige amtico job kitchen and big living space first there was no tiles so stood about for half a day then was of on hols so never did the big open space,they sent another fitter to do it made a complete ash about 70sq meters in total woman refused to pay them and had it ripped out prestige refused to pay me for the work in the kitchen even tho she was happy with what is fitted ended up taking them to court and won then they had the cheek to ring me because they were struggling for fitters to see if I'd do anymore for them joke
