Well, I've finally gone and done it! Bought the Cormar Sensation (cos it felt lovely) and the New Symphony Bounce Back. I was very unsure about the latter but the guy swore he has it laid throughout his house, so.. that convinced me it must be good.. . plus, all this stuff just started to look/ feel/ even taste the same now;)

    ****************

On another note, we have already have a couple of new unused rolls of underlay - the cumulous in cloud9 (given to us, so sticking with them)
The carpet guy said I'd probably need more but I was sure I had another roll in the garage, however, I dont! So before I buy a third roll - how much of it will be needed? - as i'm thinking, if not the whole 15m roll is needed, I can ask around if someone has remnants wanting rid of? I know a neighbour has a 10.5m roll of the cloud9 contract going begging..but i'm not too sure if can mix both types..any advice? (maybe could use that on stairs? - is it a nice feel?)
    room sizes:
    5.15 x 3.37
    3.98 x 2.7
    stairs/ tiny hall
    2.10 x 1
10 stairs (stair is 75cm wide)
    3 winders
Many thanks in advance. Please can someone respond at earliest convenience as I'd like to get everything ready before going back to work for the week on Tues! TIA

Do not mix underlays in same area
Going by your sizes the neighbors cloud 9 contract should do your stairs and hall, what you have should cover the rest.

Ah, thanks for info about not mixing different types. Helps a lot.
Just out of interest, how much would be needed to be used on the small hallway AND stairs? Any idea? M

Hobbit meant not use the same next to each other, so use contract for hall/stairs/ cumulus in the 2 rooms, that would be fine.

Arghhh! Just measured my neighbours' left over underlay- it's only 6mtrs length! (She was sure its 10.5m before)

Rang my carpet guy who's helper said that in total I need 45sq m therefore I'm a whole roll short.
(They didn't come out to measure originally, I took my own measurements in for the rooms)

In above posts, 'people in the know' have stated that two rolls should cover my rooms nicely.

Please please can anyone advise how much I need for the stairs and hallway then?

I have googled to no end and found that 3m of underlay will happily covers 10steps (luckily, that's how many steps i have)

    Normal step width: 75cm
    Tread: 23
    Rise (vertical bit) 20cm

Hall way is 2.1x1.0 needed (so total, 2.1m of underlay here?)

The winders are getting me stuck. I have 1 kite and 2 winders.

The total area they cover from a birds eye view is 77cmx80cm - the longest length being 1m (going through middle of kite step)

    Would appreciate any assistance!
    Thanks a million

In the nicest possible way, I hope the sensation doesn't start de laminating before it's a actually fitted because it bas been happening alot with that mnufcturer. I agree it feels lovely and soft but it's 100 polypropylene, it will suffer pile crush. its not just the top that's important with csrpt, It's the whole process of the carpet being made.

Use your neighbors underlay for the stairs and winders and if necessary buy 2mt to do the hall, shops should sell you that that amount and not buy a full roll. You could always ask the fitter to supply this as most carry a small amount just for Case's like this.

I'm not sure you will like the feeling of two different underlays!

This may be an obvious question but how come the retailer doesn't work out what underlay you need?

He said to me I needed three rolls (originally) And I knew I was covered - but then, only two emerged from storage so after soughting advice from here - it transpired I don't need the full three. Called back yesterday and the worker in the shop said I need the full 45sq m - but I know i can't need that much. I asked him if i could leave a pach of the old underlay I had already (under bed so wont be walked on - hasn't been walked on since laid) and he said 'yes, should be fine' whereas, on here, i've been advised not to mix the underlay.

So my point is, I reckon he's just trying to fob me off cos either the bloke is new to this, or really can't be bothered to help. I've spoken to him twice now (once in the shop, and the next time when he called to say the carpet was in) and have gotten the same answers. The owner of the shop is a great guy but they're in the middle of opening another store at the moment so i've not seen him recently. THey didn't even come home to measure the floors after I took the measurements in with me initially, they said 'it was fine cos there was enough width on the roll' to be sufficient, so no risk of shortage. I don't fancy calling again and getting the same guy speaking to me - cos it'll be annoying (for us both!), and I've been in that shop so many times, im actually embarassed to go back again!

    Are you thinking I've bought online:confused:? - cos I haven't!
Can send you my invoice too to eradicate any doubt :D

    (gulp)

Oh maaaan, I can't believe how difficult this process has been. You make very valid points (wish you'd posted a week ago!) I read extensively about cormar and I think in my original post I said I would avoid. try to? But the guy was so 'pro' the sensations that he said if he was to recarpet his house, he'd lay this one down in an instant. I fell for the sales pitch hook line and sinker! However, should it start to delaminate (i've really educated myself on these terms now) I will defninately bebringing it up with the carpet guy. We have a good relationship as we bought from him the two times before (well, my folks did) so hopefully, he'd be supportive. In another forum, someone had mentioned how fitting it on bends etc was a nightmare, but that thread ended with positive reviews. im sure, only time will tell. i'm so greatful for your wise words. needless to say, i've got a funny feeling in the pit of my stomach now after reading your post..as its all paid for, delivered to the shop, and it's going to be laid on monday.. fingers and toes crossed i'm not back on here having a moan in a week/ month/ years time..

for the stairs we got 'new symphony bounceback' is what the guy has on his (only he has a v v light colour -must be child and pet free) it better have good bouncing properties...

You're a star! Thank you, thank you, thank you :)

My first reply was advising sensations wasn't the ideal range.......you then brought it anyway, I wasn't assuming you brought it online, purely asking a question from a pro's point of view.
I have previously worked in retail for 8 years within this trade and would have thought the assistant would have helped more to save you needing to ask obvious questions like how much underlay you need here there and everywhere....it wasn't a dig just a question.

    That's me being para

Reading back, I've just realised I was gunning for the temptation range- what happened there?! The names were too similar..I've obviously gone off track and confused myself. I've also just realised the regency was recommended- I must've completely overlooked that name, as I can't even find it in my notes or quotes. Will make note of it next time as got a few more bedrooms to do cover once budget allows. The ad Thanks for the advice.

As for the assistant.. I can't comment. I can only assume he's new as he did recommend for me to go with felt back on the stairs and hallway initially.

I wasn't intentionally being an 'askhole'. Promise!

    A little feedback..
We ended up needing only about 3sq mts of extra underlay and the fitter had spare cut offs in his van so he put it in for free :) All that debate about buying a new roll..pfft.
I went for the Sensations range by Cormar - deffo no delaminating so far, and the New Symphony Bounch Back on stairs and landing
Have had the carpet down a few months and its still looking great - very soft and incredibly plush. Have had many compliments on the texture and the 'bounce' of both carpets.
The only thing I need to do now is go to the carpet guy cos i have a feeling the fitter used the old grip in one place, thus the new carpet is kinda 'escaping' out from under the grip. - so he may need to install a wider one seeing the underlay is quick thick too.
It may well be early days to see any 'crushing' but if it helps anyone else searching for a carpet with qualities similar to what I was looking for - our house has had a massive footfall during the past few months and it's held up very well. Needless to say, it's strictly 'shoes off'. Bought some cheap shoe covers from Amazon too.. a coupla quid for thrty odd..
Don't regret my choice at all..so far so good.
Will post back in a years time (if not sooner!)

You should have heavy duty door plates really, the basic plate are not up to the job of retaining a thick Saxony carpet.
