What type of carpet and underlay to lay on wooden parquet flooring

My house was built in the late 1960s and has the original wooden parquet flooring in the lounge, dining room and hallway. As far as I can tell the house has a proper damp proof course, which is below the screed on which the parquet floor has been glued using what appears to be a thin layer of bitumen glue: so it does not seem that my wooden parquet floor with its bitumen glue is intended to act as a damp proof course.

Currently I am planning to put underlay (probably Cloud 9 Cirrus) and carpet down on top of the wooden parquet flooring. I am considering choosing a carpet that is 100% polypropylene, as I like the colour options available and the stain resistance and stain protection aspects of polypropylene carpet. However, I am wondering if a carpet that is 100% polypropylene is suitable for laying on underlay on top of a wooden parquet floor. I am querying this because I have seen a couple of reports on the Internet of wooden parquet floors ‘buckling’ when a polypropylene carpet has been laid on top of them.

I should be grateful for any advice.

It will be fine with cloud 9. If your worried put down some paper felt first

Thanks for that. I've had a look at the video and it specifically mentions that Breathe underlay is good for going over parquet.

So, in general is it the case that in order to prevent a parquet floor from 'sweating', the type of underlay that is put on top of the parquet is more important than the type of carpet that is put on top of the underlay?

It's good to hear that the Cloud 9 should be okay for putting on top of parquet. What might be the benefit of putting some paper felt down first?

I'd check with manufacturer first. Not sure if it's breathable enough and could cause the blocks to sweat which will lead to further problems.

Okay, thanks for the advice: as suggested I will check with the manufacturer.

Cloud 9 has a guarantee from the manufacturer over wood block now. Only carpet I've seen wood block sweat from is feltback. Paper felt stops it sweating

    Really Merit?!?
All the jobs I've had to go in and replace due to the wood blowing has been with a Pu underlay....
Hair felt is suitable or you can put a pu down and give me a call later and i'll pop round and remove it all when it fails then dpm it and screed then fit your pu and carpet

An old PU underlay will do that but the new ones let the wood breath. I've only ever used PU underlay and never had a problem with the woodblock, except when we didn't put down paperfelt under old cloud 9 and installed a felt back carpet. Took it up, put down paperfelt and refitted...no more problem.

I'd be interested in this response too. Is it the same laminate over parquet. Thanks

    I'd used a felt underlay.

Used the breathe one and left plenty of fibres in the air, over the furniture and all over me.

Didn't know about cloud 9 guarantee over wood block. Cheers merit.
