Hello all. Just moved into a new build where we upgraded a lot of the flooring to Amtico Forum. Around all the skirting boards and architrave is finished with white silicone, which looks poor in my view. I was expecting a nice neat finish, without the need to Mastic to cover any gaps. How should this be finished? Thanks, Simon
I fit without silicon when I can get away with it but even if the skirts are perfect I get asked by some customers to still silicon the perimeter. End of the day if my customer askes for it I'll do it and charge accordingly but if it's down the myself then I don't silicon if I have to. If the skirts are all over the place and battered like some rat has been chipping away at it then I silicon using a fugi kit for the cleanest finish. Have you got pictures? I like to see how some of these cowboys seem to think a blob of silicon smudged in with their finger is acceptable.
Thanks. Will work out how and put some pics up now. The ‘Mastic man’ left a shocking trail of destruction behind him!!
Pull some of the silicon off and have a look at the finish....but be careful you don't fall down the gap because some (and I say SOME) new build fitters know they can slash it in because it's going to get covered!
I've seen some of these mastic guys go on a hell bent mission like they're working an ak47 it's shocking
Not sure what’s worse, the fat bead of mastic or the gaps between the planks Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The finish on those skirtings is shocking. Paint looks ten years old. I've done a lot of new build work and a mastic finish is standard on 99% of them, but not everyone slashes them in. When we fit them I always assume no mastic will be going round, and we still undercut the frames. Mastic finish also looks poor to me
Shhhhocking There will defo be some gaps behind the blob of silicon judging by the quality of laying. ....and they are supposed to be new skirts?? I've seen cleaner skirts in an old terrace. They havnt used the silicon kit by looks of it, more like their thumb or possibly a toe. As I've said before if my customer askes for silicon they'll get it for an extra charge but it would never nowhere near like that. They may aswell paint a white line around the edges
The fitters only get around £15m2 for screed, dpm and fit that's why there will be gaps, no doubt most fitters can fit neat but they are not getting paid to do it like that, it's the builders that are making the money out of the amtico.
Hi , To the floor layer and the mastic contractor the Builder is the client , he wants mastic because it covers differences in floor levels and conceals movement during settlement. This is no different to a skirting board or an architrave . The standard for mastic is " should be tooled to a neat finish " it should be viewed in natural daylight from not less than 2mts. Thanks
That doesn't make sense regardless of how much your getting paid You can either fit neatly or you can't
No air test only needs to be in on 1 in 4 house types and is carried out before flooring . Ask any carpet fitter who has had to pull out the mastic before fitting
It's called house bashing for a reason! You go in bash it out and on to the next one, every trade in the new build sector is the same, I got talking to a fitter on site and had a look round while I'm talking to him like you do, he did a really good job no gaps anywhere but it took him two days to do two bathrooms, he came home with £400 for week if he was lucky, guess what? they siliconed his work. You don't get no blue peter badges on site
Don’t see why he’s slow, I don’t rush my bathrooms and have lots of happy customers I’d allocate my fitters a day for a bathroom and pay them for it so it’s not rushed and looks great
