Is this stair carpet fitted correctly?

Hi, I need some advice.. I had a stair carpet fitted several weeks ago, I wasn’t happy as one ‘4 step’ section or piece was fitted at an angle, there are strange completely flattened dents in several corners of the treads. Three pieces fitted on the ‘turn risers’ have simply come away at the edges and aren’t held down to the tread section. Also the fall of the carpet on the edge by the walls is sort of tucked in on most but not all of the stairs & just looks strange.

The carpet is pure wool and not cheap, the underlay is cloud nine and was left on the stairs as it was fine.. no grippers were replaced.

I had the manager come and have a look, he said that it was all due to the carpet being a Wilton type and that it had stretched during the week. He said that he would arrange for the fitters to come back to re stretch it. He said it happens a lot and that the fitters have got to go back several times with this sort of carpet.. That was two weeks ago and I’m about to contact him again as I haven’t heard from him & the carpet really is stretched now and bumpy ‘bouncy’ to the sides of each tread etc.

Am I being fussy ? I’ve had several visitors comment on the lovely carpet “but who fitted it ?” as it looks as though it’s a diy job.

I would like your opinion as I don’t want to be fobbed off by the fitters if there is a problem..

That is lazy and not very good. The gripper should have been replaced to stop the dipping effect and that type of carpet if fitted correctly will stretch well. Woven carpets are not easy to fit and some carpet fitters that don’t use it much will struggle with it

Thanks for your comment merit... By ‘ dipping’ do you mean the completely flattened pile in the corners?

Yes that’s where the gripper is short or not cut to the correct size

Ok thanks, it does feel as though that’s where the gripper ends, but why / how would the fitter have flattened that area .. it’s completely flat, no pile to be felt at all

Grippers should have been replaced, but at the cost of the customer, this should of been explained by the fitter or by the estimator at the time

Thanks for the reply ... I would have been more than willing to pay for grippers, they simply used the existing ones & I didn’t know better.

Could anyone tell me if the fact that one length (4steps) is at an angle could be resolved?
Also is it normal for the carpet to be ‘tucked in’ at the wall side of the riser. It’s not been done on every step & only on one side, could it be that the carpet was cut too wide? It was a straight line & not tucked on my previous carpet & I've checked friends & family stair carpets & they all look neat & straight

The fitter didn't cut them to the correct size if hes had to tuck one side in and it does look like he's not gave it any attention especially with it being a woven carpet.

Id demand they send another fitter who actually 'fits carpets' out to redo the lot including the grippers. You will have enough stretch left in them to sort it width wise and im betting by the time it fitted properly you'll have a few inches spare at the bottom

Thank you, I really do appreciate this help .. At least I now know I wasn’t being ‘fussy’ .. It’s flippin’ awful, I saved for this carpet & just feel really disappointed. I don’t think the shop has other fitters & finding another fitter would be pot luck again.
I’ll phone them tomorrow and see what they say.

    So to get it straight..
    New grippers fitted full length.
Carpet cut to correct width to avoid the need for ‘tucking’
Carpet to be stretched to eliminate side bumps on the treads
Carpet to be fitted (cut?) correctly to avoid horizontal pattern lines being at an angle
Let’s hope there’s enough carpet to get the loose corners secured

Thank you all so much for your help

Yeah it’s pretty rough, the underlay and gripper should always be changed and pu foam underlays aren’t ideal for woven backed carpets a crumb rubber should have been recommended by the company, it looks like they don’t have the experience to install them properly.

A lot of fitters cut the grippers in half and put them on the stairs so they are about 20-40mm short of the sides.
Instead of cutting them correct and using the waste on the landing.

Well two grumpy carpet fitters came this morning, I honestly think they were just going to refit the corners which were flapping about. I said that I wanted the horizontal lines to be ‘horizontal’ rather than at a very obvious angle, and that I wasn’t happy about the flattened dips in the corners where the grippers were too short and that I’d like the carpet to be cut to the correct width so they wouldn’t need to tuck the edges into the wall side..
I was told that it’s impossible to get the horizontal lines straight because of the weave.. I told him that I’d been advised that it could / should be stretched correctly.
I was told that the grippers had been in place when they arrived, I said I’d actually asked if I should remove them and was told by them that they'd be fine. (They still didn’t replace the grippers but apparently ‘filled the gaps with gripper and underlay)
I was also told by them that if they recut the carpet, i should realise it could end up too narrow.. I said I did not want it tucked in as it looked awful..
Well they finished the job, asked me to look and I pointed out that the carpet on some of the treads and risers was really baggy. He said it was impossible to get it tight and proceeded to tighten one and then went all the way up the stairs with a staple gun, stapling each stair..
I’ve had a quick look and it looks better than it did, I’m scared to look properly in case I find something wrong again.
I’ll post pics later, but would like to thank you all again for your opinions and advice.
A carpet is an expense and a good carpet fitter can make all the difference between pleasure and really horrible disappointment and upset. It’s good to know that there are fitters who take pride in their work, I just wish I knew how to find one in my area

Well I just vacuumed the carpet.. I’m gutted one of the edges just came out, it’s obviously too short and simply isn’t attached at all..
I don’t want those fitters back, what can I do?
