I’m starting to think that feather finish on ply is pretty much a waste of time. It’s weak, it’s mixed with lots of water and it doesn’t really hide anything. I think it’s either ply on a floor that’s flat as a pancake or smoothing compound over the whole lot.

    I disagree!
Some people go wrong when they mix it like piss! If you mix it right and let it go off properly it’s shit to a blanket.
Hides loads of imperfections in the ply as well smoothing out the joints

Why ? What’s been happening ? What feather ? What subfloor type ?
I’m going over floorboards in a townhouse tomorrow and need to cut my ply into smaller sections to get it up the stairwell so plenty of feather for me tomorrow .

    Mix it thicker then
If you going ply seams as a rule of thumb if you can still see the seam through wet feather it can show through a vinyl floor covering

Always feather finish, 2 coats. Attention firstly to all joins, then another full coat for imperfections, pin/screw holes, and ensuring the joins are fully covered again. Ardex is my go to feather, others seem to take linger to dry imo.

I just find it’s not very effective. I laid a floor today flat as a pancake. Didn’t bother feathering it. We sanded it instead with a palm sander. Not a single ply line showing through. I’ve also sanded and feathered some floors and the ply line still shows through. As for feathering all over the ply that’s a waste of time. Sticking to crappy feather instead of the ply. Not for me.

I use to use it ages ago but stopped as one batch seemed to take forever to dry. I really like the Shonox ast gypsum stuff. That actually does work if you get any imperfections on the gypsum screed and it rubs down well. Other than that why wouldn’t you sand ply joins instead of feathering them?
Don’t get me wrong lads I will always have a bag of feather on the van lol

2 bags of the 888 (9kg) costs prob tenner less than the ardex feather (11kg)

I used to think it took too long to dry but mix it nice and thick it goes pretty quick, ardex still quicker though

Its smaller bags but only around 10 -15 quid a bag depending on how many you buy

888s dries alot quicker than 888 but starts workable in the bucket a hell of a lot longer than Ardex so less waste

I've noticed this to with the 888, not tried the 888s yet though, is that just a faster dry that's all?
