have a customer wanting to put down a cushionfloor over ceramic tiles (actually 2 layers), doesn't want the hassel of lifting the old tiles, the sub floor is concrete and an above ground level apartment (dpm not a prob). I have suggested scuffing the tiles primer then screed but she's not to happy about not being able to use her kitchen for several hours and because of the non porous nature of the tiles poss longer. In other words she doesn't want a building site, the neighbours upset with the noise and the job complete by dinner time

so i was thinking could i use wood floor adhisive and stick plywood down (after scuffing the tiles) feather finish the edges of the boards then fit the cushion floor as normal (its less than 12sq so loose layed), i'am not concerned about trimming kickboards or doors as that would've needed to be done anyway.

Haven't suggested this yet to the customer, meeting with her on fri but i'am at a bit of a loss to think of something else.

I know it's not ideal but i await your opinions/ suggestions

Got to say mate, the builders I work for are always sticking ply on ceramics and concrete and I lay polysafe on it. Not the right way but it will be ok I think.

can you skim coat just the tiles? Would teh finish be ok?

if not use 131 primer, fballs rapid set compound

PS- not supposed to scuff tiles up but use correct primer to bond to them. Reason being is there are a lot of tiles cracking after they have been scored/ scratched due to voids under neath. When we abrade them to bond to them you are actually creating weak points. Think about how light you have to score a ceramic tile before you can snap it. Also it opens up the surface and moister can now get in which can cause issue also.

when i said scuffing i was meaning with emery cloth on a rubber/sponge block to get a key for adh purposes. would the 131 primer work for the wood adh? I was going to prime anyway
skim coat was/is a possability but with tiles varying slightly in height and grout lines there could places that it could be up to 6mm+ in depth (or am i over thinking this).

I know i've seen this before thats what put the thought into my head, not overly chuffed about it but with the constraints i'am under i'am considering it. bearing in mind its an older couple in the house (he does as he's told) and i don't think they hold many wild parties mind you what goe's on behind closed doors

depends on whos adhesive you use. Mapei's wood adhesive can be used direct to their DPM (1K Turbo) so i would 'guess' it will bond straight to the tiles ?

Skim coat is no good if over about 3mm.

I have also seen many builders attempts and i would say i see a lot of failed attempts.

I wouldn't ply personally wood and concrete/tile should always have a moisture barrier between them, hence a surface membrane, if I remember rightly it's building regs.

Mate I would use 131 primer neat then level it super 30 on top drys in 30 mins and if your flooring is being loose laid it will be fine to go on after this time
