Im thinking of getting a cheap moisture reader for Paul ( my business partner ) as he keeps borrowing my mms for testing the builders latex screeds.

    So want the cheapest possible?

Just to test if a screed is dry so he can lay the floor.

hygrometer is cheapest and only meter that confirms to BS.

But you can use pretty much any meter to use as a 'indicator' of where you should set up a hygrometer.

it can be used as a indicator Daz. It can not be used to take a true reading.

You would use it to find the wettest are and then you would set up a hygrometer in this area.

After all there is no point in guessing where a hygrometer should be placed.

This is for smoothing compounds mate.
The builders we work for are screeding jobs late in the afternoon with cheap screed from builders yard etc and want us to lay them 1st this in the morning. Sometimes they aren't dry so want a meter for Paul to put on it the screed to show the builder if its not dry enough to lay.

Would the reading also be affected by what is under the smoothing compound

it will only tell you that it is dry or wet in that area on the surface

Yes it can be. Depending on what smoothing compound was used and depth it can give you false readings. Hence should only be used as a indicator and then a hygrometer should be set up to get a true reading.
