Had a nightmare last week when my compressor broke down at the start of a night job. Got me thinking about whether I should have spares, I've got a toolbox full of spare hand tools where I've replaced items or got additional bits from courses and whatever.

I think i'm gonna look out for a cheap paddle mixer as that's another piece of kit that would really f876 your day up if it broke down on you.

I was on a sanding job last year and my 8" floorcrafter broke, the belt had cut through the part that lifts and lowers the drum :( not impressed, ran around like a headless chook... . Can't afford to keep a spare they're around £3500

Ouch, you don't expect to have problems when you spend that much on kit.

You'd like to think that things won't go wrong but, unfortunatly they do. The main thing is that it's corrected to the best ability of the supplier and as soon as. ;)

Well spotted Mike, exactly the sort of thing I was thinking about, for 40 sheets just kept in the van boxed up and ready as back up.
(Perfect if your current mixer breaks down on the next night job when you're 50 miles from home and all the other trades are waiting for you to finish!)

Totally agree, was doing a hall in laminate about 6 years ago and my fein packed in after the second set of archatrave, there was ten doors:(. Had to do the rest by hand. So got two of everything now, no more manual work for me.

Be warned with the mixing drill. We burnt one out and they wouldn't change it because we been mixing screed??
Good as a back up but don't rely on it.
Machine mart do one that is under a £100 and lasts. That's what Paul has now.
I have a German one now, cost a bit but top quality.

As Daz says, better to buy a quality one, second hand.
Refina mixers are the best I have ever used, and just bought a second hand one for £100.
If you go for one, try and find the two speed one.

Picked up a compressor out of the container at 5.30 the other morning. Dropped the lad`s off the other side of London. They had about 200 sq. m of ply to fix.
Compressor was *ucked, and would only get the nails about a third in.
Hammers out, UN happy face`s all round !

cant beat the refina one in my opinion very expensive around the 300 mark but touch wood never had problems in my opinion you get what you pay for 9 times outer 10

    word of advice.

Your all mixing Smoothing Compound NOT Screed.

When you call it Screed they all presume your are mixing concrete. (Hence void warranty)

If your mixing 'smooth compound' its is a finishing product that is thinner than plaster. ;)
