hi lads ,this may seem odd but is there a product to go over joins in ply before you screed over with 700 or renovation,
only i was thinking the other day that plasterers use a type of scrim to tape up joints ,what about a adhesive thin scrim tape or am i being daft?what do you all think.
i know to use feather but wouldnt it be so much easier if your full screeding.

whats the idea around using the scrim tape?

I could soon put it to the test for you but wondering what the reasons are around using it. Are we trying to use it to fix a issue that can be solved another way?

Like i say whats the reason around wanting to try scrim tape? to do away with having to feather maybe?

Yes instead of feather. Like a tape you just stick on the joints.

If using it to do away with using feather, well are we not using feather to fill the gap so that compound is not lost through floorboard gaps?

Will we still have a issue with scrim tape and having gaps that the smoothing compound can disappear down? or are we presuming that the scrim tape will stop compound leaking through it ?

im all for trying new ideas! Just trying to get it clear in my own mind what we are trying to do before i try it for you.

A tape that will stop ply lines showing through. Hard to test though as it could take a year to see if it works.
I mean say you go a job like I did I could put a tape down instead of feather then lay it straight away

I use scrim tape on telephone/alarm wires to stop them floating when screeding.

This would be so easy to use justroll out stickdown and screed over .
Unlike feathering no mixing no tools no cleaning tools etc cmon surley we can sort this and dont call me shirley
matt i was thinking instead of feathering to stop screed going down gap we use a type of scrim tape to do the job for when your going over ply with 700 or renovation. cant see it working when your just feathering and then laying as the tape would show thro but if screeding over 3mm then this would save on feathering .what do you reckon.

Feather edge only takes mins to put down and scrim tape would take the same time. You can latex on feather edge if its still damp and you know the product works. If when laying ply you put grip fill or morleys down on the underside of the ply including the edges which will be butted to another sheet of ply then feathering is essential if you are using a (700) on top. I always believe the old methods work best.!

What did you / we do before feather and 700 tho? Old school is best as you say until something new and better comes out ;)

I remember an old Amtico video using gripfill ( or what ever it was back then ) to fill the joints of ply !
