Anyone got any power tools from the states?
I know they run on 115v at 60hz whereas the uk power is 240v at 50hz.
Would a usa tool run from a 110v transformer?
Failing that, you can buy a step down converted from amazon pretty cheap.

Anyone got any or tried and fried one?

Ive been told a yank tool will run off a uk 110 site box fine, the only thing is like you said they run at a different frequency and so it runs slightly slower and could potentially affect lifespan of the tool, and voiding the warranty as youd need to change the plug over to the yellow marine style plug.

I know someone who bought a backup welder for £80 dollars when over the pond and he put a yellow plug on it and it runs fine.

We've got friends in the states and travel Over quite a bit brought a lot of tools back over the years great savings to be had dewAlt cordless ads drill 18v bought in 2003 for $399 about half uk price still work I can run the charger from a 110v supply always handy on site. I've also bought corded tools a dewAlt sander and a dewAlt 4" angel grinder both cost about£30 and work fine on a 110 tranny. The best savings are on hand tools a eswing hammer about £40 here will cost you about £15 and Marshall town trowls are about 1/2 price. There is a Home Depot store near our friend house there equivalent to b&q and they sell a wide variety of stuff and most carry flooring tool you would only find at trade supplier over here. So if you are going on holiday there take an empty case.

The thing with the yanks is they undoubtedly have the best kit but they don't know how to use it...

Or is that just their military Im thinking of.

I'd say the Germans have the best tools. Always too quality from there.

I looked into this a few years ago and that's pretty much what I discovered. What wasn't clear was the difference in efficiency but seems quite small
