why is when you ring a manufacturer or wholesaler for a price on a product they get all excited and start asking project names and designers names are they trying to nick your contact or is it a genuine question for pricing reasons?

I never think it's worth bothering with. You could call the project one name and a competitor could call it something else. Ultimately the suppliers ain't that fussed cos they'll get the order from one of you. The whole project registering is flawed, until they use a clearer method for registering and protecting prices there will always be a problem.

Amtico did this to me, took the clients name, and cut me out of the deal.
Supplied direct to the end user !
Always try and re spec there product now.
Interface are no better, no morals !

Had this conversation last week with a mate of mine about Amtico asking far to many questions when pricing large orders ? They insisted on him telling them who the client is & where the products going before they'd give a price. So in this conversation we decided its best to tell them a pack of lies coz we'd heard rumors of this job stealing going on ? Who do they think they are ?

I would never give a project name regardless especially now you have all confirmed what I was thinking
Problem I have is the product is very unique and as far as I know cannot match it don't want to name and shame as I don't know the forum rules

There are several firms I know of, who actively do this. I always try and re-spec packages that contain there products.
If I am forced to supply the speced product, I also make up project details, architect name etc.
Interface recently offered my client a £1 discount over my price. WHY ?

It's bad because they will get the order anyway if it's been spec,d so why step on toes and get a bad name

Ive found it really Depends who you are getting the materials from. I recently had one 500 sq, no questions, another 320 no questions just sent me the orders out. Mcd used to ask if there was a project behind it but I can't remember the last time I was asked.

Having worked in wholesale for 4yrs and being responsible for pricing pre spec'd jobs in my previous life I can assure you that all projects that are done via an architect and a manufacture are registered with a set project rate to ensure the best price is quoted. It will depend on which wholesale company you deal with, on what price you are given, as some have greedy pockets and some don't. Also there are some highlighted manufactures already spoken about above that do ensure they win the jobs no matter what, as we all know, spec'd jobs do get switched to win the order.
