No idea on what adhesive, is it normal for this to happen? Is there an adhesive tat has to be used for the karndean guarantee ? Could you use a design strip instead of door trim or would a chrome door strip be better?
Same as Daz What adhesive ? & a nice door trim the Karndean should be solid on the floor but if HT or universal has been used the working time is very short so this can happen if they've laid in the adhesive to late.
Any suitable Karndean adhesive is required for the guarantee & without seeing it I'd say no to the design strip up to ceramics !
If the tes and karndean are more or less the same height a nice chrome stickdown metal will do the trick. Can i just ask, not sure about the rest of you but now and again do u feel there are people out ther who get you to do a jpb just to have a good old moan! And im not saying this customer is in anyway was just thinking about all tradework in general. Iv seen customers on there knees closing 1 eye checking out stuff. Gets u down some days :-/
Like others have said a nice trim for the door way. The couple of lifting tiles happens to us all at times. Just give the fitter/ shop a call and im sure they will whip round and sort them
It certainly feels that way sometimes. I'm sure if we went to their place of work and started scrutinising their job we have no knowledge about they wouldn't be too happy.
How do you know they are working lose. Whats giving you that impression. Does it look like the edges are just risen up a bit or are they actually moving.
This is one of the reasons why i don't do a lot of domestics everyone becomes an expert by information, checking each aspect on a daily basis isn't right, they want to become an expert overnight to see if you have done it right or wrong i used to hate the ones that stood over me watching.i think i would have locked the door on this one,lol what floor layers do isn't brain surgery or rocket science, you lay plywood on the floor, you fix the plywood, staples are ok if they are close enough centres, if you have a few squeaks you screw or ringshank, you fill the joints with a flexible latex, you rub it down! you lay the adhesive, you lay the floor and cut it in with a knife. what you should get is a smooth flat floor that doesn't show lumps and bumps in the subfloor or in the product and stays stuck. and nice and neat around the edges its not what qualifications you have in this world its how good your standards are! 90% of floorlayes know how to do it correctly, its whether they have the time, or the inclination to do it right. most jobs are priced by the m2 and the fitter will get £x amount, to earn more money he is encouraged to go faster, more he fits the more money he earns, its like a donkey with a carrot! They sometimes cut corners to earn more money. some will say we can get away with that! some will not, they take great pride in the work and will only give a perfect job no matter how long it takes, my guys are on daywork so if it takes longer than i have priced then i lose out, but if it goes the other way then it works in my favour. we get a lot of work because of that standard of work and the service we give, trying to change a mindset is difficult, when putting new guys on daywork they still rush and do it wrong. Even when we have told them take your time and give a perfect job! its about communicating with your client, making them aware of the problems, giving them solutions and making sure you do it to there expectations. This guy looks like he thinks he was overpriced to start with and wants his pound of flesh
The edges have risen up in some of he corners or edges, I'm not here to moan just to ask your professional views which many have given and have been really helpful which I really appreciate The way I look at it is this, karndean is a luxury item so you want a top class finish otherwise I could have gone with any old carpet fitter and got cheap Lino or laminate installed, sub floor prep is one of the key elements of achieving a top finish and why should a customer expect anything different, it's not about wanting 'your pound of flesh' When you spend a lot of money you want a top class job it's the same if you buy a luxury car you would expect more from it in terms of comfort, build and performance compared to cheaper alternative but irrespective of that you should always try to do your best work, if its been quoted too low (and I'm not saying that's the case with me) then that's not the customers problem
We have different views on luxury items, Karndean is a bit of plastic with a picture of wood and a clear thin plastic wear layer, I give you it's sold as a luxury item.its just a bit of vinyl with a better picture and a thicker harder layer, cut into strips. You are entitled to get the job done correctly and it should be flat and not coming up, your right it's not your fault if the price is wrong, My beef is your checking every stage of his work on the forum, You talk of a luxury car, when it's serviced do you stand over the mechanic and take pictures and ask if he is servicing it right at each stage, No! you just expect it to run correctly when it comes back, a car is a car, it gets you to a to b, the term luxury is normally markerting, quality and service, the same with the floor, you walk on it,in general terms most floors that are done correctly last for years in domestic situations, they generally get replaced because of the colour rather than the wear, I take it you have gone to a reputable dealer in your area, he is there to make sure you get a good job,he is paid to do just that, once you have picked a dealer, trust him! one that he has given you the correct advice about the product( your expectations for a product, against the price you can afford) Two that he employers good fitters ! You don't need to know the in's and out's of a maggots ar*e how they achieve the finished product, so as you do when they service your luxury car, you hand over your money, accept that it has been done correctly and ask them to put anything right when it's not running correctly or making a noise, you just drive it The same with the floor , just walk on it and get them to put it right if your not happy, Some of the other guys on the forum were a bit harsh on the fitter in my opinion, it was like a trial by pictures via the jury! Without knowing all the facts sometimes it hard to comment. I hope it gets sorted for you, even the best people sometimes make mistakes and it just sounds as if the adhesive just dried out a little around the edges, good news it's easily remedied,
You beat me to it but my thoughts exactly, if you where buying a Aston Martin you wouldn't go to the factory and stand over the craftsmen there you'd be asked to leave. If the edges are popping up as you claim they are easily sorted. Hope it goes well
Every1 is an expert thanks to the internet. As if its not hard enough trying to convince people that floor layers aren't the bottom run on the trades ladder, you get people checking out what they should/shouldn't be doing and getting every1 else to sort the job out. It's the same as people buying flooring on the internet, after the poor company has gone to measure etc just so they can save done money to spend other things. Really annoys me. But that might just be me. I feel for the fitter as he's on an absolute hiding to nothing without even knowing.
Yep. In a garage u look at a showcar. Finished producy. Then ask the questions. Same with this. Some fitters have different methods. Wait till the job is complete. Then ask the questions. My dad owns his own buisness doing car electrics and towbars he says customers actually stand over him sometimes and he tells them im sorry but im going to have to ask you to leave as the job is going to at least take..however long and im not comfortable with you watching its quite offputting. Iv often felt like this, but then again im in a customers household so i dont really feel i have the right to ask them politely to leave me be. U do actually get the odd one who are just curious but its still off putting. And sometimes, ALOT of times tradesman make little mistakes here and there. Only human, and it shows the quality of a tradesman who can sort it out. By that i dont mean cut corners or be a cowboy, for instance my father in law helped decorate my new house and sliced into the wallpaper around the fire. He still managed to keep it attached without tearing off. It still stuck to the wall and you cant see it. At all. We've all done stuff here and there. It is not to be questioned. Or we would all be aswell pack up the tools and find something else.
Yep ur right. As someone said he maybe had plans and really had too rush. Could have had a falling out with the manager and took it out on the job. Not at all professional but weve all done it. Fitter might not be on here and cant even defend himself. Imagine a customer taking a photo of a chef cooking in 1 of jamie olivers restraunts and sending it through 1 of his forums asking if its acceptable and would he do in such and such a way...
I must admit I had a customer a few months ago who thought he knew it all and was commenting constantly and questioning everything I was doing. Basically I got the plywood (which was ring shanked) and feather finish down. I had enough of the situation and told the customer I wouldn't be going back. Took a loss on plywood and labour but at least I had my sanity.
I work for a company so cant really do the whole walk ouy job. A couple of the boys have told me stories of walking out of jobs. Im just a young pup tho and tbh i havnt got it in me too do that sort of thing i just keep the head down and get on with it. I must state again in no way im accusin the customer in this post of having a moan or that. Not wanting an argument. Its just ruffled my feathers a tad haha.
I know what you mean it ruffled mine too lol. It was my own job as I rarely work for any companies. Might put a black mark on my reputation but I've had thousands of customers who are really happy so one black mark won't affect me. You do get the odd plant pot now and again.
