We are in the process of refurbishing our Kitchen/ Diner and will replace the floor with LVT. The existing Dining floor is small format Woodblock, laid approx 45 years ago on a Bitumen adhesive/bedding compound. The Woodblock will be removed- does the residual Bitumen adhesive need removing before laying self levelling screed? Thanks, John
Get as much bitumen off as you can, latex with ardex NA. I would check that there is an effective dpm in the floor as well.
I know NA and 1200 pro are sold as to go over bitumen but surely its not strong enough for lvt? would it not be better (but more time consuming and expensive) to get all the bitumen up via scabbling/copper disk/shot blasting etc then screeding with a high strength water based screed like 300hd or k11 for the lvt to live on.
There is a few ways of doing it to be honest, there is the quick fix NA or 1200 which is cheaper and faster at the time. Or you can remove all the bitumen and use a high strength water based screed which in turn will be more expensive and take longer. BUT in the long run you are going to be saving money taking a little more time and effort removing the bitumen as your floor will last a hell of a lot longer if done correctly . The only thing I would suggest like stated above is make sure you test the subfloor to make sure it's not damp as you cannot use a dpm on top of water based screed.
