Looking for some advise after speaking with a client they have ask if it is possible /or advisable to scotchgard Carpet tiles prior or after they have been installed. My fist thought was no to prior installation as with most carpets it seems to soften them up /or would it react with the backing any ideas ppl Thanks Rob
It will depend on which fibre they are constructed from. Nylon 6.6 already has a fluoropolymer protector applied at manufacture. Polyprop absorbs under 1% of its own weight in water so drink spills arent a problem but it will help release oil and dry soil easier during maintenance. Wool definately benefits from application. At normal application rates you wont have a problem with backings assuming you use a water based product (which you would). I have protected millions of m2 of them with no issues..

When I visited the Akzo Nobel factory I was told polypropylene was inert, and the fibres are made in that colour, with no holes in the molecules, so they will not stain or take a coating, so can't see why you would get any benefit from any type of protecting coating. The major selling point of poly is the cleaning ability, but I am no expert so just making a comment
Polypropylene is a closed fibre so scotch guarding has no use, whereas wool is an open fibre which absorbs the scotchguard into it's fibre impregnating it and allowing longer clean up time although once cleaned needs reapplying and gives you an extra 30 mins or so to clean up. Oil based stains generally can't be removed from textiles although some yarns give you a fighting chance I.e. berclon
All the above very useful , I personally had never heard of applying Scotchgaurd to carpet tiles they are Polyypropylene its more the clients choice in colour that this question has arisen .
