If any of you have a vivaro,tragic with a chain id get it replaced. As Vauxhall say chains last the life of the engine well they don't. Story goes I pulled up at home van running fine went to go out and she wouldn't start. Put computer thing on and came up cam sensor fault so changed the sensor with no joy. So I stripped the van down to check timing to find 5 teeth missing of the crankshaft sprocket new chain and sprockets put on and all timed up to see she has no compression so she's down London at present having a recon engine fitted. So far £2500 down with parts,rental vans,new engine etc absolute nightmare also lost 5 days of work as I couldn't get rental vans in time. So advice is get it changed for the sake of a few hundred quid.
It rare to break a chain although the tensioner can go and make the chain jump or chains can stretch, that's why ford do not advise jump starting transits as the sudden jolt can make the timing chain jump and strip a sproket I feel for you as I had a vw transporter that broke a belt at traffic lights (not due for 20k) and smashed the camshaft in 4 prices, luckily the piston crowns were undamaged. Still cost me 1200 for the parts and I was able to do it myself, goodness knows what dealer would have charged. The VAX has obviously damaged a piston/s bent the valves poss bent the con rods, engine rebuild or replacement unit. The replacement unit should take less time.
that's what. I thought. Its on 100k. The more I've looked into it its a common problem and they should be changed every 60k.
Fook, my Lt has a chain, and its nearly at 140k. I asked, and was told same as yourself, they don`t need to be changed. Also got a Vivaro although thats not at 40k yet. Thanks for the heads up !
Dazza.......exactly the same happened to mine. Pulled up at a job got back in the van and it wouldn't start !!! Came up cam shaft sensor as well. Recon engine also. Happened just before Christmas !!!!
stupid how it just happens. Luckily it happened at home. I had a call from garage today saying 2 injectors broke and clutch could do with changing so all injectors done and clutch and some breather pipe thing. Bill keeps going up over a chain !!!
Is this a recon engine or second hand engine? If recon fair enough you need to take parts of yours to transplant onto yours ie injectors altinator ,PS pump, filters a such like, a new clutch and relese bearing is a good idea while the engine is split...does the recon include a new water pump? If secondhand I would expect it to have injectors and breathing pipes attached and some other minor parts. Would still change the clutch and poss water pump depending on milage.
