I feel your pain mate, I was kind of in the same situation as yourself being part of a family biz, but once I went on my own things have been so much better.

To be fair, what will end up happening is, if you decide to go on your own, which IMO is the best option, sooner or later your dad will need the extra work done and if your work isn't there, you will help him out, end of.
    Go for it.

This is exactly how it went with a mate subby of mine.
He worked for his dad for few yr (but full time) then decided he wanted to earn himself some decent money from the Lvt side of things so told his dad he wanted to go self employed so he could have his own work and still do work for his dad but his dad told him 'no way'...its either one or the other. So he went off and done his own thing and now his dad is ringing him every week asking him if he can do this day, that day etc. he's had to turn his dad down plenty of times and talking to his dad (who I subby for occasionally) he now regrets the way he reacted towards him. Just do it mate, theres plenty of work out there if you are any good and you'll find you'll get by without your dads work (if need be) just fine!

Think that's what I'm going to do, another firm near me has rang me asking if I'll go subby for them for a few days so that's more work but I don't know how well that will go down lol

Self-employment is much better, its just not a reliable income... if you can make it work then go for it in my opinion
