    Hi all.

I'm new to this forum but hoping to get some advice regarding an upcoming project of ours.

We moved into our late nineteenth century semi just over 6 months ago and had hoped to have exposed wood floors, using the original boards. Upstairs they look great, but downstairs they're riddled with woodworm and were rotten through in places. So we've decided to move towards a more contemporary look and would like to install high grade plywood in 2ftx2ft squares.

I'd firstly like to ask, any thoughts on how to secure the boards without having exposed hardware? What would be the best method to ensure there is no movement? I'd also like to ask for any suggestions on thickness of the plywood and if anyone knows where we can buy plywood for the cheapest? And what would be the grade we need to look for? We want a good variety of surface patina but don't want to have sand etc too.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Not sure 'high grade plywood' and 'cheapest on the market' really come together!

Yes it is, essentially we want a checkerboard effect with the grains running in different directions. Looks amazing, probably better than it sounds!

Hmmm, you serious? Never known that before...or am I missing something here!
Wouldnt it be easier and better looking to go for an LVT instead?

Westham supporter (ohhhh), thankyou. Erudite and well read evidently...a lesson in how to incorrectly quote somebody AND proudly display the most shocking colour combination of stripes since red and green. Pipe down, your arbitrary response came directly to my email; an irritating waste of characters no?!!

What is LVT? Google came up with land value taxation. Yes I'm serious.

Ply is a structural material not a finish material, I doubt there is a way to screw it down with no screw heads showing unless you fill the holes and 2ft squared would need to be cut down from the big sheets and would need to be 24mm thick as well as having to put in loads more joists to make it work, cant see it looking like anything other than a poorly fitted subfloor to be honest and a lot of agro to get it to that point too.

Only way I can see yo do it is to replace the old boards with t&g ply then cut sheets of 8x4 down to the required size and glue it down

Wind your neck in mate, you said 'and where can we get ply for the cheapest' you need high end ply for what you want to do so merits statement was correct, and it's villa not the hammers.

Out of interest are you planning to apply a finish to the ply or just standard ply finish?

I feel that more shocking things have happened today...Ebola??global war on terror. I've definitely tipped the scales with my crazy ply floor idea. I should retreat to a safe place and hide from the joinery trolls. And in future I'll go directly to dicks r us to have this verbal spew ejaculated all over me. Many thanks all, careful you don't venture down imagination lane. Stick to the carpets and missionary style
