In the last year I've had 2 jobs where we've fitted 32mm acoustic boards then fixed plywood over it to receive a vinyl floor covering. We use collated wood screws with either a Senco or a Makita screw gun to fix the screws but my problem is that a lot of the screws do not screw in properly, which means we've had to go back over the lot with an impact driver. These are sometimes 50-60 sqare meter areas so re-screwing them in is taking up a lot of time I feel is really unnecessary. I know its not the screw guns or the actual screws because I've tried a number of different types. Does anyone have a better and more efficient way of fixing ply to acoustic boards? Cheers
Thats one thing I've not tried only because on both occasions the builder has in the spec that the plywood is to be stuck with F3 and screwed down and not stapled or nailed
The noise can be transfered down the fixings. If you screw through the acoustic material into the floor below then it loses some of its efficiency
The screws are liable to squeak as time goes by. It happens with Norboards when they are screwed onto the joists. This could be avoided by using Flexyfix instead of screws and it would speed up up the installation as well.
The screws arent going right through the acoustic boards, just into them. The boards themselves arent fixed to anything. Its 4mm ply using 16mm collated wood screws in 32mm acoustic board so the screws dont penetrate all the way through so no sound dampening is lost. Just a query really to see if anyone else has the same problem.
got any links to the acoustic system? also, why is the builder specifying a carpet adhesive to glue down plywood?
