Carpet tiles on risers

Okay so pressure sensitive seems a popular answer , if it's strong enough with a small hand roller we could be good to go, anyone else use the contact spray ?

 

F66 I use

I'd hate to be the poor bugger that has to do the rip out on you staircases lol

On the rare occasions I get roped into doing carpet tiles on staircases I use normal spray glue on stair and on tile

 

Come off ok. F66 is what is normally recommended

 

Contact adhesive sticks the carpet tile so well that you normally start to damage the staircase when removing it! Especially when some clever bloke uses it on a wood staircase!!!!

 

F66 doesn't grab like f60 though

 

Well you sound like a very sensible man then. Is that the solvent free version? When you use contact and you have to glue both sides, where do you leave the tiles to go off? On the step after you've cut them to size I'm guessing?

 

this is why I wouldn't use f66 not practical
btw it is a wooden staircase

I have used a spray contact adhesive on a vinyl on a stairs case and they fell off(both sides sprayed) had to restick them all , this was Evo stick branded contact adhesive

 

Yes solvent free don't leave on steps with been solvent free you can warm up adhesive and it drys very quick

 

Spray isn't strong enough that's why they reccomended f66 on vertical

 

Ive heard of carpet tiles being sprayed on the riser falling off but can't for the life of me work out how? riser is sprayed both sides after cutting to size, the nosing and then the tread hold/wedge them in place, so how could they fall off?

 

If the nosing is existing and the old carpet is thicker than the new one! They shouldn't fall off but don't hold.

 

So do you do them one at a time or leave them else where while it's going off? Heat them up with a hot air gun?

 

Depends on the porosity of the subfloor
Prime if need be etc
But normally a higher tack than spray is required if porous substrate is involved

 

I've fitted lots of carpet tiles on stairs. I use spray all the time. Only once can I think of a call back for a tile slipping off a riser. Use contact adhesive spray if concerned, that won't move.

 

Ok to be fair I can see how it could happen in that scenario.

 

when I said fall off...I meant come unstuck not literally all laying on the tread

 

The only adhesive ive used with vinyl on stairs is grabfast spray for sheet or if vinyl tiles then used pressure sensitive.

Carpet tiles ive used F3 wet then nosing on to hold tight in postion = can get rather messy, f60 few times but told it will eat the backing on the tile so went back to grabfast spray. Never had any issues. Used normal spray numerous times without no issues, nosing keeps them tight.

If using existing nosings (not removed) then out comes the grabfast again but have used gripfill on that type of install few times also.
Wooden staircase will be a lot easier.

 

Spray adhesive is crap no matter how you use it, a lot of jobs I've repaired or replaced have been sprayed on. It breaks down really fast can't remember the technical term but it goes back to its gloopy state without the stick and is horrible to clean off. Can't restick without cleaning properly so I avoid it like the plague on any vinyl based products and carpet tiles. I normally use f3 maybe messy but it grabs and stays on, wouldn't use any solvent based contacts or adhesives as it just destroys the backing and is a nightmare to rip out.

Bit of a rant but feel better for it haha

 

I agree with all of that mate but I just can't get on with f3 on stairs. Fecking what a mess and then getting the ****ers off a few years on!
