Hi all, In a fit of enthusiasm I recently fitted my own carpet and trimmed it too short at the top of the stairs so it won't reach round onto the riser, so I'm looking for recommendations on how to fix the problem!
Get a qualified fitter in to fix it, which is probably what you should have done to fit it in the first place. I tried fitting a carpet once in a small flat I had in London. I'd seen it done and it look dead easy. Wrong!! I made a mess and learned a good lesson. Leave it to the professional. They make it look easy because they are trained, good at it and do it every day.
Well that's not a particularly helpful response now is it how do you learn if you just pay to make a problem go away?
I don't fit carpets, so I'd certainly get a good fitter in... likewise., not a lot of carpet fitters install LVTs., they in turn get a trained installer in. Jam., you can either bodge it by getting another piece of carpet to fit the last step and cut it in (no doubt nailing it to the stairs), or get a trained fitter in, who'll have it professionally fixed in no time.. (Again, I know what I'd do)
2 options, wrap it round the top step like doing a bullnose (which will look crap imo) and put a seperate piece on the riser......or get a pro in to do a 'professional' heat seam join providing you have some spare carpet and repair it for you. Can we see pictures of your carpet fitting please ...promise we wont laugh!
Jampants, I would say Andys response, is very fair, considering we are mostly professional flooring installers, and suppliers. My guess is that you have bought some flooring, probably from the internet (although thats just a guess), and then had a go at fitting it yourself, and *ucked it up. We all make our living, mostly selling, and all installing flooring products, whether carpet or vinyl. It`s kind of like, cutting out the middle man, but as such, you loose the service which you need the most, which would be why people could be a little upset that you did n`t choose to buy your carpet, and have it installed by a local independent supplier. However, this is a forum, and we are here to give advice. My advise firstly, would be to contact a carpet fitter, who could rectify this for you. If you wish to try and rectify this for yourself, if there is enough carpet, you could take it over the lip on the top of the step, and then pin it underneath the lip, and stick a band to the riser. Can I ask how you fixed the carpet to the rest of the stairs ?
