Got asked today how long I’ve been in flooring. Was shocked to say it’s 30 years this year.

Can’t believe how quick life is going.
So started on YTS in 87 in Liverpool working for a big firm doing vinyl tiles , commercial vinyl & carpet etc. Some ceramics too lol. Mid 90s I was doing a lot of Karndean and Amtico.

Left there in 98 to do a start with a mate a partnership, subbed out 1st few years and then got into working for a few builders then last 10 years mainly LVT with some wood , laminate and carpets and now opened a unit.

    What about you lads ?

29 years for me. Started on domestic carpet
I do feel it after a long day on site now. One of the lads that works with me, had his step meter running, where we were doing an acoustic floor. By the end of the day, he had walked 15 miles !

Near 20yrs for me. Started working for a firm training up and my first solo job was polyflex tiles and needle punch (<good for cleaning your tools) then made redundant 4yrs later. Subbed to 3 firms after that for another 6yrs mainly doing Argos/stead & simpsons/shoe zone then got the arse and went on my own. 1 man band now mainly but do have labourers and couple subbys doing bits for me when it gets to busy and sciatica kicks in.

Best jobs for me were back in the day on the alliance & Leicester refurbs. Easy money for 2 nights graft.

I started with my dad (old school NIFC master fitter) when I was still a school for a bit pocket money at weekends and holidays fitting carpets and vinyls. When I left school my dad said either get a job to pay your way or your coming to work with me.
So I got a job lol but that didn’t last Long

15 years this year. Agreed to help my mate who’s family owned a shop after a few too many beers in the pub and never looked back lol! Lucky to start with a nice shop doing mostly Brintons and axminsters. Always hand sewn bullnose, although I never paid attention to that detail when I started. 3-4 years later went subbing to a firm in epsom. Amtico studio closed down and one of the guys opened a shop so got to see loads of Amtico and border work done by some really good fitters. Didn’t realise levelling compound was meant to look like that until I watched them boys. Bit different to the carpet fitters green bag screed lol. Then started to get right into wood flooring and went on a BWFA course which was one of the best courses I’ve been on. Generally think we are a decent trade that has to deal with every other trades fuck ups and going on training days and courses helps your realise there is a better way. Now got 2 vans and 4 of us ticking over nicely. Doing some nice work. Always looking for more advise on here. Knowledge is power and all that lol
