I`ve been on a job in Manchester for a few weeks now. Nightmare job, lots of problems, over four floors, and its round. They jet washed the beams, leaving 3" of water in some places. Then, spraypainted, everything ! Nice and wet, and defiantly the coldest building i`ve ever worked in. This was on a warm day
This was earlier this week, 2x access covers to go in too Lots of rubber on this floor, 450 sq. m, 2x layers
I dont know how you do it i dont miss these jobs one bit. So glad I came out of the commercial scene, good money but a f'in ball ache most of the time. Hats off Neil
There is a lot to be said for quality domestic work. Don't miss the contract scene, never went to one where they were ready for you.
I started out doing domestic work. Mostly working for a fairly high end department store in London. After a few years I got fed up with it, and ended up going contract, and fitted in pubs/clubs for a few more years. That really was bad, and would never go back to it. Moved back to domestic, doing some really high end stuff, in London again, and the money was good, but I hated having to deal with the home owners. Now were 99% contract, and thats how I will carry on. Don`t know if the boys will stay with me, or find there own way. They have only ever done contract, so at the moment thats all they know
I find I am in more control with domestic work, you get to build a good relationship with the customer, and that often leads to a recommendation, and the cash flow is better. I will only undertake, certain small contract work if pushed. I reached a stage in my working life that I can be selective on what I do. I have a mate in the same line of work as me, and we sub contract to one another when needed, and that helps, but most of the time I work solo. It's always a dilemma when you have guys working for you, one day they might leave and be working against you, it's happened to me in the past. But now in my 46th year of fitting, I am still here, and will be for a while yet. Good luck with the contracts, I take my hat off to you.
