Hi everyone, south Yorkshire based looking for an employer. I am willing to travel outside south Yorkshire. My career to date has been in retail. I am currently pursuing a change in career, I have chosen to become a floor layer. I have chosen this career due to the fact that I enjoy practical work, delivering customer service, problem solving, decision making and job variety. I am also physically fit and I am looking forward to learning a trade where there is a rewarding and tangible end product. I have enrolled on a carpet fitting course (starting February the 19th) with the UK flooring academy based in Burton on Trent, the course will last for five days and will cover both basic and advanced carpet fitting. I believe this course will help me gain a good understanding of the floor laying trade as well as give me hands on experience. My professional goal is to develop skills in all aspects of floor laying, allowing me to advance to a very highly skilled level. I am willing to pay for any relevant courses I need in the future, as well this I aim to become fully qualified by obtaining an NVQ through on site assessment when I am competent enough to do so. I am a quick learner, highly driven and a committed individual. I would be more than happy to work unpaid during my probation period as well as pay the bill for any tools I require for the job. I have safety boots and floor layer trousers. If anyone has got any advice or looking for a new hard working team member please could you email me on andsheffajw^at^gmail.com and I can then forward a CV. Thank you all. Andrew Wilkinson
Welcome Andrew, how old are you? You are moving in the right direction with regards to learning the trade but im sure you know a 5 day course wont make you fully understand how this trade goes within a few weeks, not knocking you. There is a wide variety you'll need to learn along the way if you want to do all types of flooring. We all had to start somewhere so atleast you are starting from the right point and the fact that you are willing to splash on courses shows you are more serious about the direction you want to go than some. This trade takes some time and a lot of hands on experience the better but dont get ahead of yourself and batter any reputation you will be trying to build by running before you can walk. Take your time and just allow alot of patience. Have you looked into any flooring firms around your way to see if they can offer you any labouring? Its always a good start.... Your cv wont be much help to be honest, you have no experience so you just need to show that you are willing to learn and take it serious and by sounds of it you are.
Oh and you have floorlayer trousers? so I guess you are half way there already ...You should invest in a good wide brush aswell
Thanks for the response. I am 31, I wanted to learn a trade straight from school but was persuaded to go to uni. Even though I graduated and got my degree being stuck in an office really wasn't for me. I then went on to merchandising in retail which I have enjoyed more as I enjoy practical work. I am now willing to make any Sacrifice necessary to learn this trade. Luckily the other half will support me financially, as I am willing to go out and labour unpaid to prove myself. I have contacted about thirty employers locally, the response has been positive but it is a case of when a Vacancy comes up in the future they will be in touch. I have started off with carpets just as a starting point really and chosen a course to improve my confidence before working for an employer. It is a big jump because I am starting from scratch at 31 and wish I'd started earlier but I am hard worker and going to throw everything I have at it, I know in a few years time I'll be glad I did. I'm not quite sure why I mentioned the floor layer trousers on reflection I fully deserved stick for that ha. My next step will be going directly to employers and speaking to them face to face. I am willing to give as much time as it requires to find an employer.
You got the right attitude so far pal.what with it being a little fresh after xmas it will seem quiet with most places but keep on the case and good luck.
Andrew Pm me your number I will pass it on to a friend who has contracts with housing company's fitting carpets he may have a fitter who needs a hand, that's the best way to start learning bashing out houses on new build sites, he's 20 miles away in West Yorkshire
