    Hi,

I have a customer who recently went with carpet right to do most of her house, they've messed it all up and its all bubbled within weeks. She found me and i fit the same materials to her last bedroom back in may,a week later i did her landing too, went back a week ago to measure the lounge and a fairly tricky concave platform in the living room. The work i had done was still perfect

Anyway she has a roll and a half of celestial underlay left over that shes paid a good £13sqm or so for,its a 10.3mm rubber and im wondering if its a carpet right exclusive or if its made by fball etc?

She also asked me my opinion on underlays and i always recommend pu underlays, cosi 8mm if theyre on the budget end or a cloud 9 cirrius if they want something nicer, imo rubber ones always turn to dust and wear much quicker but im no expert on underlays i stick more to the fitting side of things.

Is the PU one the right type to recommend and is the cirrius a good underlay to use in the future?

    thanks!:)

Nothing wrong with cirrius, decent 9mm underlay.
I tend to use connoisseur 8mm/10mm these days. Conn 8 was my budget underlay for my customers o_O....Hate fitting decent carpet on crappy underlay.

I don't push any rubber underlay, hate the stuff. To damn heavy aswell o_O

In terms of U/lay, in my opinion Cloud 9 cirrus is by far the best! It comes with a price tag over cheaper alternatives but a good quality underlay will see the carpet lasting a lot longer.

Most of the time when I’m talking to customers, I offer a cheaper alternative too, but than as small business, I don’t add massive mark ups like the big guys do... £13 for underlay is a joke, but then that’s how they can keep their fitting costs so low!

I always use a super high density underlay like floorwise trend, especially on stairs and landings! Recently I’ve used it throughout the house!

The only rubber I use is crumb when UFH is involved

i was looking at the cloud 9 crystal and caviar, ive never seen it before or used it,any thoughts on that? looks to be the best they sell.

And yes £13sqm is a joke,we did some work for paul simon before they went under and theyd sell the cheapest crap underlay for £8sqm. I think the biggest reason these big shops go under is they have totaly incompetent estimators and people dealing with the flooring who have not got a clue whats actually involved when they go to see a job, quote it and measure it wrong and badly advise customers

Used their caviar & crystal 9mm plenty of times, nice dense underlay but prefer the connoisseur range. Decent for the money and not massively different for the price of the caviar range.

I hear customers tell me they paid like £100+ for their underlay with the like of scs etc and most of the underlay is crap in my opinion.

I don't make a massive profit on selling the underlay, mine mainly is from the carpet & labour.
Don't charge as much as most shops for door plates & gripper either. The shop I fit their lvt for charge shocking prices for door trims I don't know how they get away with it.
