Carpeting just the treads

I am looking for advice on how likely we'll be to find a carpet fitter for our house.

We recently bought a period house which had an old carpet on the two staircases (house over 2 floors) and the first floor connecting hallway. We've removed the carpet, all tacks, nails, underlay and staples and thinking of options. Staircases are in relatively good condition so can be sanded and painted smooth. We originally thought to just paint them white but decided against that as they would be too noisy and slippery. Looking at pictures online, we found the attached example where just the treads were carpeted in wool herringbone carpet. Crucial Trading does an action back carpet (called Alpine) which looks like the photo.

Now, we've asked a couple of local fitters for quotes and they didn't get back to us. Posted a job online, still no takers. I can only assume this is an unusual or tricky job and fitters don't want to bother? Or maybe it's the holiday period.

The manufacturer's fitting guide says it should be fitted using double-stick (recommending F3/F40) and stapled onto blank grippers and that it doesn't necessarily need stretching. Sounds relatively simple for an experienced fitter.

Should we keep looking for a fitter or is this a bad idea? Any reason why it wouldn't work?

There's no reason why it wouldn't work at all, I've done this many many times and seems to becoming popular again.
Maybe the fitters are busy but they should still get back to you to keep you in the know. Keep at it and you'll find someone that will do it. It's not a hard job at all.

Have a look on the NICF website and you should find a local fitter who can do the job.

It’s not difficult just time consuming and this time of year they’ve probably been booked up for over a month. I highly doubt you’ll find anyone available until mid January and expect to pay a premium for this kind of work, good luck finding someone just don’t settle for a fitter because they might be available, it’s worth waiting for a quality fitter.
