Just checking - is it possible to get a floor fitter to do a 'survey of works' - that I could use in a court claim - I'm thinking of going to small claims to recover cost of the tiles.

I doubt it tbh, they're is independent people who does it .... but you have to weigh up the costs involved tbh. But, make sure you use a FLOORLAYER , not a Carpet fitter (they're semi-skilled lol) ....... trade joke, but mostly true lol

So the main contractor got the floorlayer? Sorry ‘handyman’ ?
If he did ... it’s down to the main contractor I’m afraid.

Shouldn’t be laying the tiles onto 18mm plywood anyway.
Should be overlaid with 6mm SP101 plywood or FG1
Or screeded with a fibre compound

You get a handyman to fit your flooring then you decide you’re not happy so you try get the cost of tiles out of him? How much was he going to charge you?

We can all see it’s a bad job but similarly he’s a handyman. Where I’m sat it’s your problem for asking him to do it in the first place.

Just don’t pay him and move on.

If you do decide to get someone in to inspect it, just take into account that it's the same as with the installation, you are going to get what you pay for, if you go cheap, the report might not be worth the paper it's written on when it goes to court and you will have wasted more money. I would seek legal advice on your chances of winning, before you throw more money at it

Unfortunately we are going to keep hearing it, the majority of the public still don't see flooring as a skilled trade, manufacturers and diy stores are pushing their products as easy to fit to increase their sales and anyone can go buy a Stanley knife and call themselves a fitter, with no proof required

You got a handyman to do the floor, you will get no where I'd of thought in court, chalk it up to experience and move on, would be different if you got a floor layer with the relevant qualifications to do it but you didn't so you should only expect to get a handyman finish which is what you paid for

It mostly doesn`t matter what qualifications they have, but a portfolio of work would be a good start.
It would at least show they have some work they are proud of.

Also, try to get some recommendations from people you know or get the job done through a shop, where they should guarantee everything from the product to the fitting
