I cut them, but my fitters don't, like you say, a pain in the bum having to follow them round, especially when they just leave them off without even marking how much needs to come off

We do. I find the more you charge per door the less of a pain it is

Most will say it's not their job, they're not joiners, which is fair enough, but that's why they make door trimmers, so you don't have to be. You can charge for trimming a door, you can't charge for taking one off, both can be done in the same amount of time, in fact can be quicker to cut it than mess about with a load of chewed up screws or fifty years of paint over them

Normal doors we do, we don’t even breathe on fire doors though.

Same here. Apparently they need to be within 3mm of the finished floor height and weight a tonne! And those stupid closers drive me mad

Charge a tenner a door within 3 whole houses you have paid off a door trimmer and are making money on the machine, would be silly as a carpet fitter not to do it

We insist on £20 per door paid cash direct to the fitter, and still some dumb ass fitters wont do it.

Apparently I’ve been told this is nonsense by another firm and the tolerance is only around the side and top of the door. That’s 2 different companies on the same job giving conflicting advise on the fire doors.

Have a doorsaw and charge for doors when needed, obviously you pick and choose when to tell the customer you can cut a door though .

Company down south called sck who do new builds and have you cut all doors for free and if you mess one up or dont cut them they charge you for it... ‍♂️ 1000 doors later and the saws broken

I think each door manufacturer can set its own maximum gap but the standard is a maximum of 8mm for a fire door and 3mm for a fire door with smoke seals . These are usually the the doors or frames with brushes rebatted in .
If you refit a fire door it would be your responsibility to ensure it works correctly.
In Public / commercial buildings the doors in the communal areas are often alarm activated .
Also fire doors are not tested for asbestos.

Some companies are installing new door sets as they do not have the correct certification. These new doors and frames can only be installed eg. cut or drilled by a certified installer. After the big fires everyone is nervous .

Depends on what kind of fire door it is, like i said apparantly in new builds its 10mm floor to door, I'd say if it a proper fire door with attached regs, a floorlayer shouldn't cut it, that should be down to the chippy to get it to rags, as we would work to a lower tolerance than they would, for our lot we need to make sure it's no more than a 5mm gap apparantly but your talking a standard door for that, if a fire door or vineer I'd just take it off and let a chippy sort it

Exactly. They had year round work as they got alot of contracts i guess by offering door cutting as a service, many fitters will put up with it for the consistant work. But as we all know good carpet fitters are rare and the good ones usually have alot of work anyway. :)

I'm constantly on the look out for a used one as I just cant justify the price of one new. They do look great though.
