Good afternoon all Sorry I am if I am needlessly starting a new thread – I am new. However I have a question about renovating my floor and was hoping for a bit of advice. I want to fix pine slivers into the gaps between my floorboards before sanding the whole floor, so that I end up with a completely flat, gapless surface. However there are two issues; 1. My floorboards are Tongue and Groove so they will not allow standard pine slivers to be inserted between them (and I do not wish to use the type of slivers that are marketed as being especially for T+G floors). 2. In some places my floorboards are fixed so close together that a sliver would not fit into the gap. My floorboards are 20mm thick. I am considering the possibility of setting the cutting depth on a circular saw to 15mm and running it along the join where each floorboard meets. My thinking is this will cut through the tongue on the boards and also create gaps of a consistent width (I’m thinking of using a blade with a 2.2mm kerf). This would then allow pine slivers to be inserted the length of every floorboard and hopefully deliver a continuous, symmetrical effect once all slivers have been inserted and the floor is sanded and finished. My thinking is that by setting the cutting depth of the saw to be shallower than the thickness of the boards I won’t be able to cut deep enough to damage any joists, concealed pipework or wiring which might be fixed to the underside. My question is - aside from the fact that I would be creating a lot of work for what is purely cosmetic gain, is there any other obvious reason not to do this? I usually overlook something when starting a new project, what is it this time? Please, have at me and thanks for taking the time to read. Adam
Hi Mj Thanks for responding. What do you mean by ‘whittle the boards’? Not heard that term before? Cheers
it's where the other trades may chop a piece of the floorboard out as they are being lazy and not going under or through the joists, I've seen boards as thin as 3mm where a pipe has been put above the joist.
If you remove the tongue and groove, it may allow up and down movement of individual boards causing the board to break away from the slither
