Who fits skirting ? Amy tips to share? done a job this week. With MDF. Took a while but enjoyed it so going to do more. got a big Bosch mitre saw and a Ryobi Pinner.
I've done it in the past when my customer has been in struggle to get it done in a time frame for me to fit the floor but dont offer till/if I'm asked. Last one I did was in an old house and that's the only time I pushed for it because the existing skirts looked like a rat had been nibbling on them and were quite uneven, they were having borders so I offered to take existing off and replace with new - cheeky sods asked me if I'd paint them aswell but looked so much fresher once completed.
As for tips.....yeah don't offer to take the old ones off if you can especially in the older houses, bo matter how much I scored along the top of the existing ones I still has to fill the odd spot here and there where the plaster had cracked but I made them aware of all the potential disasters before I go my chisel and crow bar out
We do loads of skirting. Always make sure the customer is prepared to make good any damage to the walls. I learnt that from working for a shop that promised customers there would be no damage to walls when we remove skirting. Guess how that ended? It’s cheaper to buy skirting than beading but as you say it’s got to be painted and no way am I doing that. 50% of our work is wood flooring so we have to do skirting or we would lose loads of work. Mostly howdens stuff, flexi fix and concrete nailer, job done. Very rare that we need to drill and plug now. We also fill it as every bloody customer says it’s unfinished even tho it’s the painters job. I do skirts on nearly all my wood and laminate jobs, either remove and refit or new,when I remove skirts, i will usually prise them upwards first, so if they're glued it breaks the glue off rather than pull on the plaster. If they are nailed, waggling them up and down tends to elongate the holes rather than pulling out a chunk of wall
With mdf skirts i like to use pink grip solvent free, if the walls are a bit dusty, spray adhesive makes a good primer, i nearly always caulk them up,those little rubber silicone tools make it easy to get a good finish
Yeah probably 70% of the PVC skirting work, tend to use FlexyFix aswell, F60 is a bit hardcore for the hospitals Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yeah the black stuff, out gaffer doesn’t order it in so we tend to use flexi, I wasn’t keen at first but haven’t used it much to give a valuable opinion. Flexi on the other hand is brilliant, we use it all the time for loads of application Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
