Hello, I’m hoping for some fitting advice please. We bought carpet for the stairs, landing and small bedroom, all the same style and colour. The shop supplied it all on one roll of 4.5 x 4m. Our independent fitter arrived today to lay the carpet and stated that the shop should’ve cut the carpet to individual sizes because there’s no ideal way to cut it other than outside on the ground face down. The shop also missed a winding step from their own measurement report so we also didn’t have enough carpet to complete the job! They drove straight out with the extra carpet and supplied the wrong style/colour!! The fitter cancelled rightfully so. Should the carpet have been supplied in cut sections from the shop? Also is it standard practice to cut carpet face down on the ground? I’ve never witnessed it, and surely weather is a big factor. The shop said all their fitters cut carpet on the ground. Interested to see what others have experienced. Thanks
It can be rolled out backing down if enough space. I always get carpets that I need to chop up on the job usually stairs or a landing come off a bedroom its nothing new. Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk
Thanks for your advice. We’re having thunder storms here so I was concerned when they suggested cutting it outside, especially face down. I’ve only ever had individual carpets fitted which were all cut and fitted indoors. We don’t have much space indoors for cutting from full rolls. Thought I’d ask the pros before taking their word.
Ideally you would want to cut it down in a warehouse (the shop shouldn’t be doing that it’s the fitters job) sadly it’s not always possible and cutting up at someone’s home happens often, ideally your fitter would have some ply to put down and cut up on rather than directly on the road, your carpet should be fine without though so don’t worry. The cutting down of carpet is the responsibility of the fitter. If you wish to employ a fitter independently of a shop, then the fitter or customer should have his or their own means and premises available for that part of the service.
This is why I've always got tarpaulin sheets on my van Usually cut it up in my unit but when I have it delivered to the customers house I nail/weight a few sheets to the ground enough for me to cut up. It is difficult if you are fitting a terrace house on a busy street but I make sure I've sorted it before.
I’ve always had 5m wide tarpaulin on the vans for this reason. Sometimes you have to cut outside as there’s no room in the house and there’s very few carpet shops that will cut a plan up for a fitter. It’s normally down to the fitter. In a ideal world the plan can be cut in a yard or warehouse before you get to site but I found when I worked for shops they use to do the plan wrong sometimes and you would have to find steps or put joins on the landing. In the end I would rather take to site and cut it my self so I could remeasure the area before cutting it and if there was a issue I could point it out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The old,,, I have to cut your carpets face down on the wet floor job? What is this guy talking about. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Why would you need to roll a carpet out, then flip it face down to cut it up sounds like he couldn't be bothered. Have had to cut carpet up for tricky landings many times on a driveway, as long as its clean i dont see the issue.
