Anyone advise me on fitting high end short twist pile wool carpets, normally I fit low grade felt backs ect. - budget end of flooring, but an old customer wanted some quality carpeting laid. NIGHTMARE.!! My usual practice is to `rough out` then stretch fit onto grippers FIRST then trim with a hook knife then bolster selvedge into gripper gully - NEVER cutting net then stretching and tucking. However, the said method wouldn't work on this type of 80/20 HEAVY carpeting install as it would not `engage` on the gripper, despite `ironing` with flat bolster: like fitting plywood. It should be noted I laid 10mm P.U. but left original grippers, as they were correctly fitted, approx 6mm gully. So, I had no option but to cut-stretch-bolster. Why would my usual method of fitting not work. All advice much appreciated. (qualified fitter)
The fitting will be the same. You need better quality gripper rods for better quality carpet. Diamond gripper or Roberts professional gripper are both good. Stretch the carpet on all sides. Trim just enough to tuck and tuck with plastic bolster or eye witness, tucking knife Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
What merit said pretty much, if the grippers were short pin for instance 10mm underlay will sit too high for them and the pins will never hold it, could double up the gripper. Gripper is the culprit either way by the sounds of it
Thanks for post stan1191, yes I see what you mean - they looked med. pin, but not absolutely sure - or could be poor qual. chinese gripper.
I have found this happens sometimes and if its customers on prep down they always say it worked before !!! So i generally go round twice with spray glue , its not perfect but i does help John
