Hi carpet experts, I was hoping someone could shed some light on a carpet issue I have on the stairs. The carpet has been down for 11 years and is still going strong in the hall and landing, despite only costing £8 SQM. But within 18 months of laying, these holes started appearing at the front and the gripper nails are now exposed which catch the back if your heels as you come downstairs. I now have the funds to do something about it. I love the carpet and was thinking to save money I could get a local carpet repair guy to replace the damaged sections using my hall carpet and just get new plain carpet for the hall (incontinent cat ruined a section of hall carpet). But am I just going to get the same problem in 2 years time? Is it a waste of money? I can't find any chat on this particular problem and what might have caused it. Could there be an underlying problem that needs sorting first (gripper? Underlay?). My alternative is to have the hall stairs and landing recarpeted but it would have to be in a plain as I can't stretch to a pattern that would match higher up the house. And I do love this carpet. It is quite thin, and had some sort of felt as well as rough on the back. Any advice gratefully received, thanks. Also, can't seem to upload photos to here, must be doing something wrong.
What is the depth of the stair tread? An undersized tread may cause you to kick the riser, every time you walk up the stairs. Having the stairs pinned under the nosing and flat against the riser, without gripper or underlay on the riser may help
Sounds like you have a felt back carpet stretch fitted on the gripper. You need a better quality backing or you need to change the gripper to micro plast or short pin Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
So stair tread is 22 cm deep from front to back. It's a 1900 house. If I understand correctly, I think you're both saying that short step plus thin felt backed carpet plus wrong grippers have caused the wear. So if Mr Fitter removes the grippers and underlay, and uses tape or some other less protruding accessories, I should be able to reuse the hall carpet on the stairs? Thanks so much for the advice, I appreciate it. 8 year mystery may be nearly solved!
I think you've done well to get 8 years out of a cheap felt backed carpet, not many fitters would want to re fit the hall if you say the cat has had mishaps here and there, I think it would be best to treat yourself to a new one
Sod that, sounds like you a tight a** I wouldnt be reusing a felt back carpet to replace a felt back carpet, just rip it out and put some new stuff down. Can't believe you've lived with it for 8 years lol
Honestly only ever used felt backed carpets on landlord properties where they change them every 12-18 months to get years out of one is surprising, it’s a full uplift and new carpet, underlay and gripper after that amount of time. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
