I've gone down the route of supplying the carpet/underlay myself with a fitter lined up to install the stuff.

I'm happy measuring the rooms/stairs for sizes, what I'm not sure on is how much carpet I need to order. Everywhere I look only seems to tell you the basic job of measuring a room. If someone has a link to a guide that explains it that would be great, otherwise is it just a case of ordering 10% (or more) extra than the square meterage?

I've drawn the carpet on graph paper then fitted the carpets onto it in jigsaw fashion but I can't help feeling I'm overthinking things, or missing the blindingly obvious about what way carpets need to run. I could ask the fitter (more than happy to pay for his advise) but would you be offended if you were on a fit only job?

We've currently chosen Associated Weavers Cassius Invictus carpet but have now been put off reading comments about flattening. Looked into Lasting Romance which we like nearly as much, or Heartland Heathers that don't seem to have the colour shade we like. If someone want's to offer an opinion on what's best, or alternatives in a similar price range.

You want to add 10cm- 15cm on the cut you need.
    So a room 5.15m x 3.6m

    I’d order 5.3m x 4m.

We only supply & fit so wouldn’t fit it. As long as you find a decent fitter you will be ok.

I generally advise customers to use us for supply as it can eliminate headaches and potential issues especially as we usually come in at a competitive price.

That said if a customer wants to supply their own products for whatever reason then I am always happy to measure up and let them know the size of the cuts to order. Personally I don’t charge for this as it can make my job easier when it comes to fitting as I know it’s right and have the cutting planned out already.

My advice is ask the fitter you are planning to use, this will tell you a lot about them as well. Few fitters like walking into a job blind so this gives them an opportunity to survey the job and talk to you to ensure it all runs smoothly on the day.

Yeah I'm fine with that, it's fitting all the rooms onto the carpet roll bit I'm clueless with. In an ideal world I would prefer supply and fit but budget, a not very good experience in one of the shops we did try, indecisiveness etc means I'm supplying things. I did make sure I had a good fitter happy to do this lined up beforehand.

I suppose the obvious question is would £20 extra to confirm the length roll be reasonable if I gave him the room sizes (2 bedrooms, and a landing/stairs)

Yes my fitter would be made up with that.

Thanks both, rather than mess around myself I shall pay the fitter to help.

Are you trying to order all the room and stairs on one piece of carpet?
Don’t do that, the fitter won’t thank you for it. order each room individually and work out what you need for the stairs and landing and order that As 1 piece, you may get a few steps out of what cuts out of the rooms but just inform the fitter of that when he arrives.
I’ve done a few fitting only jobs and 9/10 they are fine but I always offer to come and check measurements prior to the customer ordering. a lot of the time a good fitter will be able to work out your cutting plan a better way saving you money

I had one last year. Customer asked for a quote to fit 4 beds and a lounge, didn’t want me to check sizes I gave him a price. Turned up to fit it and was met by a 25m roll in his garage that he couldn’t possibly help move because he had a bad back.

Great isn’t it. To be honest I’ve had enough of online suppliers. Keep having issues.
The last one we did we had to send the carpet back as it was the wrong size and we replaced it to get it done in time. Taken me 2 months to get the £750 refund on the original carpet and the customer had to hound them for it.

I try not to do fitting only jobs now on carpets the customer has ordered online because of issues with these online suppliers, I don’t mind doing it if it’s been delivered by a shop or they bought a roll end.
I push to supply them myself now, a lot of the time I’m cheaper than the big shops anyway

Haha they all have bad backs. Amazing how many delivery drivers have bad backs too. Always the courier/haulage companies.

Thanks again guys...I was wondering where he'd be cutting the carpet after I had the full roll delivered! I've given myself a month between ordering and fitting so if any issues arise I will have time to sort them.

Does anyone want to comment on what manufacturer is best, it's not going to be high traffic and the missus is quite keen on vacuuming. Also I was planning on cutting plywood strips ready to go under the door bars as underlay is 11mm with a thick pile carpet, is that a good idea?

I like Victoria carpets. Rarely have any issues with their products and they go down lovely. I don’t fit a lot of AW so can’t really comment on theirs but I have heard they suffer with flattening.

11mm underlay can cause problems. You’ll definitely need to raise door bars and you’ll want deeper gripper or the carpet will dip around the edges. Personally a good 9mm underlay is better than a lot of mid range 11mm. They are often too soft and don’t perform well long term. You’ll probably end up paying about the same but will get a better result long term and a nicer fit.

The fitter should sort the strips for the door bars themselves (I carry several strips pre cut plus a bucket of wedges).
