Hello, firstly apologies this is the wrong forum but I’ve waited to get a confirmation email and nothing as yet. I’m having a mare with some Karndean Van Gogh smoked oak I had fitted.

Long story short I ordered this through a local company and the fitted they used made a complete mess of the job with cut marks all over the floor, short planks and lifting edges/corners. For some context the house is a new build and they’ve put that awful mastic around the bottom of the skirting, which is causing issues as it won’t let the floor lay flat - although we were told that it would be taken off prior to the floor being laid, and it wasn’t as it seeks it’s too difficult/time consuming to get off.

The owner is been out with the fitter and they spent a day sorting out a load of the cut marks and poor edges, and the floor is looking a lot better but I’m still not really happy with it. It wasn’t cheap (even though now I understand maybe the van gogh actually a ‘cheap’ version) and I’m a bit stuck as what to do next.

Take a look at the pictures and let me know what you think. It’s hard to photograph but it’s clear there are lumps in the screed as I’ve got a lumpy hallway, the light shines here and looks awful every time I go past. I still have edges and corners that won’t sit flat because there’s silicone under them. The flooring also seems to have some sort of magic scratching ability, all of the furniture is on felt or similar and we are very careful people (just 2 of us) but we seem to have scratches that just appear.

Some areas have been silicones to hide the problems, I hate silicone and thought the floor would go to the edge everywhere. Am I being too picky? The shop owner has been helpful but I’m fairly sure he doesn’t know what else to do as the fitter isn’t ‘employed’ by him but just does the work for him. I didn’t choose the fitter, but at the moment I’m the one left with what I feel is a substandard floor.

We’ve spoken about taking the skirting off and possibly me replacing the skirting with new, but I’m assuming then every edge would need redoing so the skirting sits over the edges.

Any help massively appreciated, even if it’s to tell me I’m asking too much from this sort of flooring.

    Cheers,
    Stefan

    Awful!

The silicon should have been removed before screeding the job....im assuming it was screeded??

That's an amateurs finish, you can see the lumps so the floor wasn't checked and rubbed/sanded down before fitting the lvt.

The scratches will show up more on darker colours so whether the areas have been scuffed pretty hard then it should scratch 'as easy' but art select and Van gogh in the darker colours I've noticed do show fine scratches pretty easy.

The mastic that you noticed is for the air test, it is a time consuming job to remove it all cleanly but has to be done regardless before the prep (screeding) is done

Thanks for the reply. Yes it was screeded, clearly not that well! I was told the silicone would be removed but obviously it turned out to be a bigger ball ache and as such he didn’t bother. I wish he’d have said at the time as I would have happily paid for another days labour if I had to in order to get the right finish.

Do you have any suggestions as to what my options are? I wasn’t present at the time of the job (relocated 200 miles) and so everyone had been paid unfortunately. The store owner had offered to get Karndean out to have a look at it, not sure how much help they’ll be though.

It seems like I’ll either need it all redoing or my money back? Which I suspect will be hard work so I imagine I’d have to go small claims and I can’t see that being easy as the floor is technically ‘fitted’

At a bit of a loss really, the actual floor looks really nice it’s just let down by the fitting.

Let him have karndean out then atleast you'll have extra back up if you have to go legal route because karndean will straight away point to prep and installation error. The shop owner is shooting himself in the foot suggesting the visit because surely he doesn't think Karndean will say there is nothing wrong with it o_O...unless its his best mate.

Needs the edges taking up and removing the silicone then refitting properly. The lumps (providing they are just random spot and not trowel waves) can be sorted by uplifting, sanding/scraping then relaying the planks.

Shop sounds clueless because he can't look at them wonky planks and think it's acceptable!

....you mentioned the owner himself came with the fitter and spent a day on it and left you with what he thinks is acceptable, shocking!

All the lumps under the floor need to be removed. He’s either got crap in his screed or he hasn’t swept/hoovered before flying out. All the mastic must be removed! As for the scratching that’s lvt for you. It scratches easily a bit like wood. Anything that moves needs to be protected with felt pads. As said the darker colours show the scratches a lot more

As already said, as long as it's only a couple of small areas in

the middle, it should be possible to rectify, the shop should pay for a decent fitter to put it right, but it probably won't be cheap as nobody likes putting right somebody else's work, the shop also needs to guarantee a full replacement if the screed lifts in the process.
As for the scratches, once the floor is sorted, just give it a coat of karndean refresh, that should take care of the light scratches

    Thanks for all the replies.

Yes it was acclimatised before fitting, I got a few quotes and no it wasn’t the cheapest. If it was really cheap I wouldn’t mind so much. The biggest issue I had was getting someone to fit it before Xmas as everyone is so busy and half didn’t even seem to want the business.

I’m going to go back and see if he’ll get Karndean out, but the consensus is it needs to come up to rectify the high spots and if it pulls the screed up it’ll need completely redoing? Then the edges need sorting, again.

If he can’t do it I suppose my only option is to get my money back, which won’t be easy. I can’t imagine anyone else wanting to fix someone’s else’s work so suppose I’d have to get the lot redone again.

Get your money back if you can then its just a case of paying out your own pocket to have it ripped out back to the start.

Tell the shop owner that you will take him up on his offer of having Karndean out and keep on his case, if not then ring karndean yourself, explain the situation and see what they suggest.

....oh and my acclimatise question was to the 'crash Bandicoot' post ;)

Thanks, I’ve got in touch with them again. Karndean can’t come out for a long time because of what’s going on, so the next step is to supply pictures which will be passed on for them to inspect. I can’t see how they’ll be happy with it, if they say no problem then it’ll have to be dealt with in court I suppose.

OK, you can ask the moderator to delete for you. Meanwhile, whoever looks after the site will chance upon this thread and investigate.

I should have mentioned that you can only delete a post from a thread if there are no other posts following it. Perhaps this is your issue?

Ive seen this before but havent done it myself.

Theres a post that I had left and it was answered in another post somewhere completely different so I wanted to reply in the original post by putting the link to the other thread for others.

    How do I do this?

    Thanks
