A friend of mine has just started for a new company, working labour only.
They want him to sign a contract, and in it is a retention clause of 5% released after 3 months.
I know its standard practice in the industry to hold 5%, 2.5% released on PC and normally 2.5% after 12 months, but does anyone else have this on labour only work.
Ive only ever been told by 1 company they hold 5% and told them to poke it !
My experience with retentions, is they are hard work to get back.

If they can't get workers to do it on retention then they will have to look at it again

There a big firm, with lots of guys on, but I think they are struggling for guys at the moment.
I just wondered if that was the norm these days.
We only really do our own work, and sub to maybe 2-3 companies to fill the gaps.
You should see the contract, its a joke !

Sub contracting is a nightmare. Both times I’ve shown them to a solicitor they said walk away from them. Totally geared up to shaft the sub contractor from all angles. Maybe worth the risk if your a big firm and you have mouths to feed then you may need these contracts but no good for me.

Yep I agree. One of the few firms we do work for, asked me to sign a contract. I phoned the main guy there and told him this would be our last day on site, as I won`t be signing anything.
He said, just crack on and forget it.
