Floorboards showing through ply?

    Hi

Had Amtico spacia installed 2 weeks ago, fg1 ply was laid over floorboards (presumingly 6mm as an Amtico approved retailer carried out the install).

Didn't notice immediately as not obvious in bright daylight but have since noticed 1 dip and 4 ridges on the floor, each ridge/dip goes across the full width of a plank and does not extend onto either of the adjacent planks.

Retailer has advised this is the floorboards showing through, is this likely? I was not advised of any issues with floorboards during install but would they show through the ply and planks like this or could there be another explanation?

    Any advice appreciated.

Looks like they've bent over something and deformed? Can you measure the shortest distance between the bulge/recess and the end of the plank?

*each plank... Are they all similar distances, as they're usually packaged face to face. This could explain why one has a recess and the others a bulge.

Thanks d'Arcy, that makes sense, I have found 2 pairs of planks with a corresponding recess and bulge in the exact position along the plank.

Tbh I can't see that happening, they don't want to take responsibility for the issue. They have agreed to fix down some lifted ply in another area of the floor (presume they know they can't deny that is down to their prep ) but I'm not sure how they intend to do that without lifting some of the planks?

Fix down some lifted ply ? What is that ?
If your floorboards were really bad he should of advised you they would use 9mm plywood and Or a fibre smoothing compound.

did they feather finish the plywood ?

It may have even come from the manufacturer like that, you occasionally get it with karndean, an odd plank or tile with a bend on the end, which even heating up and rolling won't get out

There are 2 planks which are lifted on 1 side and move up and down together, the company director who viewed advised it was likely the planks had been laid so the edges were lined up with the edge of a plywood sheet and that the plywood sheet was not fixed down securely (pics attached).

I can not say whether they feather finished the plywood but they are an Amtico approved retailer so I can only assume they followed the correct install procedure o_O Invoice only states that sub floor is to be prepared with FG1 Plywood fixed @ 150mm centres and I was advised HT adhesive was used and that they do not use a roller on the planks.

I was not made aware of any issues with the floorboards when they lifted the carpet, and as far as I'm aware there were no issues. The director only brought up the floorboards possibly being a problem as an explanation to the recess/bulge issue. When I enquired should any issues not have been addressed before fitting the curt response was 'I can do you a quote to take it all up and put down 18mm ply if that is what you want'. He was also very confident Amtico would tell me it was a 'perfect install' if I wouldn't take his word for it.

There are also some fairly noticeable gaps between the tiles in a few places, which he assured me would close up when the central heating was reinstated in the room, but I struggle to believe this could be true?

I fear he is trying to bulldoze me in to accepting the issues and go away

Haha he's trying to back you into a corner, don't listen to that crap about Amtico will back him up that it's a perfect install and you tell him he takes it up and starts fresh but this time do it properly or else you are more than.happy for Amtico to come out and inspect.

Of course yours planks will 'fit correctly' when you put the heating on, nothing to do with his prep and fitting at all :D:rolleyes:...its people like him and his amateur fitters that portray jobs like this that kill a customers trust

So, what I would do, is ask them again (via email - with pictures) why they believe this is an acceptable standard of work. Tell them that, as installers of the project, they do have the opportunity to come and rectify the issues.
When they refuse to - because let's face it, they sound like twats - call Amtico customer service on 0121 745 0800. Explain the situation, ask to send through the emails, photos etc. Ask for an independent inspection at the cost of the installer or Amtico themselves - considering how shoddy the work looks they should agree to this as it is either installation error on behalf of the flooring company, or QC issues on behalf of both.

Its a bodge it and scarper job Completely amateur Its only just been done and its sub standard work at best. I'd give them a chance uplift and replace it but don't let them fob you off Its neither anywhere near good or acceptable

Thanks all, you have given me the confidence to stand strong :) he had me almost convinced I was making a fuss about nothing! I will definitely contact Amtico if I don't get any joy from them, I didn't think Amtico got that involved but that's good to hear!

100% stand strong and do not settle for anything else. You can't let this director guy try and pull the blinders over your eyes, it's awful workmanship and if this 'firm' was anything decent they would held their hands up. Don't let him threaten you with getting amtico out to back him up either, no chance can this be passed anywhere near acceptable.

    Keep us posted

It’s likely your going to need a hell of a lot of prep work to have a LVT floor that will last then.
6mm ply and ht glue just isn’t anywhere near enough in a old house. Maybe start with a moisture reading of your subfloor before you cover it with a impervious floor covering. Then your likely going to have a lot of repair work to the floorboards. Pipes under the floorboards? Then select the thickness of ply followed by a smoothing compound.
