i subcontract as you regulars know, and the other week i had a fitter complain that i asked him to finish his lvt and ply in the right place for a single doorbar instead of 2 inces into the room with nails in the end of it and he moaned.

so, do you think its the job of the carpet fitter to cut back the lvt and ply so he can place the bar ontop or should it be the job of the lvt fitter to cut it back to the correct spot when theyre 1000% sure carpets going down.

whilst we're on the subject, its usually 6mm ply i think and the lvt, do you all use single bars or z bars? we're asked to use singles but if its a thin carpet it doesnt always like going in the bar that great. might give the Z a go

I fit the LVT and carpet myself on ally jobs so I'm easy either way :D

...but if the customer has carpets from elsewhere then I fit up to the closure and let the carpet fitter decide whether he fits a single on top or cut it back for a zbar.

If I am doing the carpets aswell then I judge by the thickness of carpet to decide single or Zbar is going to be the choice of bar

Most times using a nap on top of the ply and LVT the door needs cutting. So we mostly use a Z bar.
We always cut into the door frame 5mm if a Z is going on.

To be honest as long as it’s not short it’s the next persons problem. But it’s a bit like when the tilers over shoot the tiles with a massive slop of tile adhesive. Really grinds my gears. One day I’m going to just say nope… Call the tiler and get him back to chisel that mess off. Problem is it’s easier to just sort it. They always leave the bloody tiles in the wrong place too. You wouldn’t get me cutting the tiles back tho. So it depends on how competent the carpet fitter is. Most should be able to deal with it

Its not like i cant cut the ply back, its the principle of the laziness of pushing more work onto me and the lvt fitter going home at 1, whilst leaving all their rubbish in the lounge, all the mess theyve scraped and swept up into the lounge rather than bin it. I just dont understand why everyones so inconsiderate of people they work with

Its pretty much standard issue new build.
Not saying its right, but normally rates are pretty shitty and its the quickest possible in-out, and potential issues like these are the next guys problem.
That type of attitude now seems to be the common denominator in the new build industry through all the trades.

I expect them finished in the right place, I wouldn’t mind but it takes an extra 30 seconds to do rather than leaving that mess.

Id accept that they were probably too lazy and shit to have the ability to cut it at the right place and didnt care because whoever came after them doesnt know them and id cut it back.

Mine are people on the same firm as me, who know where to finish it but cant be bothered.

The attitude and workmanship in this industry is overall shit.

It does, but our rates are pretty good, were on £4.50sqm for carpet +£25 diesel and £25 staircharge, some of our sites that are a bit further are £5.50sqm. If people arent happy with £4-500 a day subbing then they will never be happy.

Quite frankly, even if i wasnt on that price i still dont expect other people to clean up after me.

so, if you are fitting the carpet and at the other side of that room is another door that has not yet had anything in it, how would you leave that doorway?
Would you flap the carpet through or cut the carpet into a door bar and fix that bar in the correct place?
