I am a young lad looking to join a company/fitter who would be willing to take me on as a trainee and teach me the trade of carpet fitting, I am very keen to learn the trade and more than willing to muck in with labour as long as I am also learning how to fit, I am currently halfway through a flooring apprenticeship however as my assessment date approaches I have come to realise that I am being used purely for labour and the opportunity to fit or learn are far and few between, It’s not ideal for me to leave my current job however I am very eager and wanting to learn and It’s clear I am not being given the opportunities I need to reach the end goal , it’s quite hard to fail the assessment and I don’t want to end up with a blue card but not have the skills I need to be confident in my job and carry it out correctly. It wouldn’t be like taking on a newbie as I have previous experience in the trade so I understand subfloor and carpet prep etc, just really eager to learn the trade so if anyone can help or knows anywhere I can try please feel free to drop a reply, thanks. Based in sw London, happy to travel within reason.
Have you discussed this with your employers? They need to be aware of how you feel, and without knowing all of the circumstances I am guessing that they have invested time, effort and money into your training plan and assessments/exams. So before you jump ship try to understand why it's on the course it's on and if required attempt to get its direction modified to suit all concerned. If that doesn't work then a new ship may be required. Best of luck.
