We had stair underlay and a runner fitted by Carpet Right.

We can see the underlay at the sides of the runner, Carpet Right said that is correct and I told them it is not. I am still waiting for them to arrange someone to come out and it has been four weeks.

The photo shows what all the steps look like.

I am right in saying it is not right and needs to be fixed?

    Thank you.

Unfortunately with open sided stairs you will always be able to see the underlay from that angle
you can staple the sides down but that doesn't look good from the front
    hope this helps

    Hi Jasper

    Thank you for your reply.

We replaced the stair underlay and runner with new.

We could not see the underlay on the old runner and it was not stapled down, we expected the same with the new underlay and runner. It looks awful and we would not have replaced the old runner if we had been told they would leave like it currently is.

Looking online it seems to suggest that they should have cut a piece into the underlay so it would not show?

    Thanks.

Push a ruler under and See how far the underlay is cut back

    Hi

The underlay has not been cut back, it is less than a cm away from the runner edge.

    Thanks.

Yeah you should cut the underlay at a angle to hide it or staple the carpet under the nose

The underlay should be shorter than the carpet so it doesn’t show, I also cover the sides with black tape to make it even harder to see.

Underlay should be shorter than the carpet in the width as said above. If its open sides it should be cut at an angle.
We always use an 8mm underlay so it's not too much height to fall down. Or have them pinned under each nose which looks good.
It's not a big job to correct.

As a fitter the above comments are correct. I would go for an 8mm underlay, yours looks like 10mm to me? And i always cut the underlay back on the riser.
What doesn't help on your staircase is the nosing looks like it sticks out more then a normal one. That gives a steeper angle and a larger gap on the side to look into.
So underlay cut back, I turn the edges to make it sit better and a possible pin/staple about an inch up on the side? But this can sometimes pinch the carpet. Can be fixed and made better
