I'm a carpet fitter of 25 years and I am thinking of moving into solid wood flooring. I will be doing some courses. I was wondering what the rate is for instillation?

If you are thinking about doing unfinished wood such as parquet, then you have to charge for the sanding and finishing too, so you could be looking at £45-50 per sqm, Bona do a reasonably priced sanding and finishing course in Milton Keynes and i just happen to have a complete sanding set up for sale if you're interested :)

Would some courses be enough in wood or would I have to have a lot of on job training also?

Personally, i'd say the theory side of it is the most important and hardest part of it, knowing about the materials you are working with, which products to use on each job,sub floors and prep, site conditions, etc. Sanding shouldn't take much practice, once you know what you are trying to achieve with each part of the process and which machine, sandpaper grit and type to use,if you have floorboards at home, you could practice on them, pine boards are quite soft, so it can go wrong very quickly, so good to practice on, plus if you really mess it up, you can just put the carpet back over it :)
