Hi there, I am replacing the carpet in my staircase that leads to the first floor. The carpet will meet the tile used in the entrance hallway. What is a little unusual is the area where the carpet starts is slightly higher than the tiled floor (it could be timber under the carpet). At the moment, the carpet is tucked behind the tile, and there is no threshold used. There is a bit gap between the tile and the carpet. I have attached photo.

The carpet shop person said I could fill the gap between carpet and the tile with grout first, then the carpet would sit on top of the tile, and no threshold is required.

My query is: is this method ok? My concern is the carpet is more likely to sit on top of the grout unless they use underlay or something to make that part thicker? Also without the metal bar/ threshold, would the carpet move, or the end of the carpet is damaged more quickly, also break the grout?

I thought about using a timber beads (stick it to the carpet and the tile), the carpet shop person did not recommend it.

I really would like to get some advice from this forum.

Thank you in advance. 3.jpg 1.jpg

How do you want it to look? A metal Z is the easiest answer but if you don’t want that there you could look at a Ali Zee bar

Thank you so much Simon. The Ali Zee Bar option looks good. I called the carpet shop, they said they’d use gripper only and never had issues.

If just use gripper will it be enough, please?

it probably sounds silly - does the Ali zee bar connect the carpet and the timber it sits on or something else, please?

    Thank you!

    Cheers,
    Joanna

They just need to pack the front of the step out with ply and fit the same way. The gap will then go

  6. I see your concern! Grouting the gap might hold the carpet in place temporarily, but over time, the grout could crack, and the carpet edge might fray without a threshold. A metal threshold would give better protection and stability. If you don't like the look, maybe a slim timber trim could work better than grout. It sounds like using some kind of threshold would be the safest option to avoid wear and tear on the carpet.
