    Hi all.

I'm looking to take on an apprentice, got a lad in mind who's 18.
Do i have to pay the national minimum wage which appears to be £4.83/hr = £193.20/week?
Needless to say i don't want to pay this much, was hoping nearer £100/week, are there any official apprenticeships to go through or can i take anybody on and call them an apprentice in order to pay them less!?

If he works for you. You dont have a choice he must be paid the minimum, if he is self employed working with you then he has to agree to the amount he is charging you for his services.

Cheers chaps, i guess what i'm asking is are there any official apprenticeships i can put them in to gain a proper qualification, in doing so meaning i only have to pay them £95/week.

I've borrowed an electrician's apprentice for a few weeks and this is what he is doing, he goes to college 1 day a week and works the other 4 days.
He's got a mate who I'm interested in taking on, but when i rang my local college they said there were no courses for flooring.

Have spoken to business link and am waiting for a call to go into it in more detail but looks like it might take some time - i was hoping to take this lad on in the next couple of weeks really with work pressures and all that.

I'm hoping matt might be able to give some guidance!

there is in "wood flooring" that he will need to attend a college in birmingham.

However the course is not avalible at the moment and im not sure of the in's and out's yet.

I will let you know when it is finalised and what the script is with funding etc. Untill we know i cant comment really. We are doing our best at getting this sort of thing up and running but its a slow process due to the amount of people the apprenticeships have to go through after we have written them.

    sorry

p.s im unsure of any carpet ones. I will check it out tomorrow and if there is non i will look into getting one set up also.

    Alright ? :D

you will have to pay him at leat the minimum wage. Depending on his age this could be as little as £ 3.57 per hour. Of course you dont have to employ him for a full 40 hrs a week, which could lead to a smaller wage bill. I pay my lad the full 40 hrs but as you know we alwyas have upholstery to do.

    cheers

Cheers Ray, i was going to pm you to ask what you did with your lad but no need now.
As he's 18 i'd have to pay him £4.83/hr which seems a lot for a young lad who knows nothing - i could employ a floorlayer for not much more. :(

Starting a trainee has been fairly frustrating at times, it can be un-nerving paying out wages when you are fully aware that the trainee has not made that money that week. It is however also very rewarding to watch them learn and start to be able to do stuff - in the long term I'm sure its the way to go.

There have been times however when I have thought that an older, more experienced person for labour purposes only and only maybe 25 hrs a week may have been a better option.

If you do decide on a lad you have to invest lots of time and patience in him which is very admirable - so long as you get a return in terms of him being keen and willing to learn then it should work out.

I wrote to the local school, got a few applicants and whittled them down from there .

    good luck !

    Ray
