As above, I've just finished underlaying my attic stairs, led's are in too. I have the carpet at home too. The question is how do I measure and cut it to fit, and shall I use grippers to fit it or will a staple gun suffice? :mrgreen:

I understand that sentiment fully Ian, but these days I'm having trouble borrowing a ladder!! Thing is I have to learn hands on because I love doing this work ya see. So why not do my own house? Makes sense to me since I fix ANYTHING that needs to be fixed, fitted etc. I just need peoples suggestions on whether to measure, cut and staple each riser and tread for carpet or use grippers???
well , fair play for having a go yourself. however a pro should really do it. But as i know you wont be going down that route then maybe you can start a new post for each step (no pun intended) you take. This is a forum for advice after all! and to be fair your questions should benifit others in the future Maybe you should ask a question on how and what gap you should leave with the gripper? after that is answered then we will progress to underlay install and so on....
No gap. No grippers. The under lay has been snug fitted from riser to tread and I've cut each step individually. I'm gonna do my carpet the same way. It may not be the very best or professional way to do this but personally I'm happy and so are me kids! Thanks again for posting.
Just to add. I have taken every pic of the work I've done on my stairs, like before and after shots. From finding the loose risers and treads, screwing them down, to fitting the led's and underlaying with slits for them to come through. The second I get a PC with working USB's I will upload for future reference.
to be fair there is alot more to it than meets the eye, pile direction etc. All adds up to how the carpet will wear. anyway, get some posts up on how to gripper, how to underlay etc and i willl talk you through it. Also you may find it better to do the stairs in runs of maybe 3 steps+. Single steps is not the best method unles you are a pro installer.
This reminds me, we done an attic conversion, the bloke in the flat upstairs didn,t go much on it though!! :lol:
For real?! I found that way to be MUCH easier, since I don't have to keep moving the rest of the carpet out of my way! :lol:
A little update for everyone remotely interested. :lol: I have now completed the repairing, underlaying and carpeting each tread and riser as one including scoring the carpet to push the LED clusters through. Started from the very top riser and tread and worked my way down as I personally felt comfortable that way. I was gonna use grippers for the carpet but decided it a nuisance and stuck with 12mm staples which are currently holding strong! (need to see just how long these actually last compared to grippers mighty er...Grip lol) So I'm nearly at the bottom two rungs and disaster........Ran out of staples and it was 18.01 when everyone and their dog is closed for the day. So now I'm gonna wait for tomorrow and finish the carpet. I have taken a few decent pics but as I have mentioned before my laptops USB's have failed.
