This is becoming the most important part of our job with each and every day that passes.If you carry carpet waste then you must hold a current "waste carriers" licence.This is valid for three years at £154.00 which isnt bad considering it equates to a pound a week or thereabouts!.If like me you do not carry a lot if any then it probably isnt worth having a licence.There is a fine line for carpet fitters and it is this,you can get away with the fact that it is your waste that you are carrying(and small amounts), also with the view that you have fitted the carpet for free and also if the customer hasnt paid for the flooring then the goods are classed as "still yours" will probably justify this if you happen to fall foul of roadside checks.Otherwise a fine of up to £2000.00 can be had if you dont comply.This does not include a cost to tip the waste,so you either make money and pay a pound a week and stay in line or you take the risk or dont carry waste at all.This information was obtained from the environment agency.Actual tipping is with the local council so dont get confused with the two different departments.
I saw that people are getting concerned with "RIGHTS" on this issue.If they want more money off us then why dont they send us a letter notifying us of the changes.As i see it its better to have help that to be told "that iam sorry but you have to pay the fine",you wont do it again will you!.I rang the Environment agency this morning just to clarify the correct way to deal on this subject because we all need to know.
My license has just come through.It cost £149 (FOR 3 YEARS) and to renew it,£99. This came about because i was pulled in by the local council, the police were there also , checking my van.I got the hump with the council official, proper arrogant git he was, as i started to get more annoyed , he threatened me with an instant £3oo fine, and they wonder why there is so much fly tipping! What annoys me how do you know you should have a license until someone stops you and threatens you? :x

It was this thread that brought me to the site initially... (i am currently sorting out our Enviromental Policy :cry: ) now I am a member and can ask questions/post.... Does the waste carriers licence that your waste management firm who empty your bins/skips not cover this??? (I speak as a retailer rather than a fitter) If not then our prices are going up
You pay them to carry/take your waste.We as individuals are responsible for what we have,have not got on board.They work for the government-nuff said!.
I was contacted a few weeks back by company in Yorkshire ( Eden Developments) which are offering to collect waste from your customers at a small charge (£10.00) they left leaflets for fitters to hand out to customers offering this service. However I have one other point I was under the impression that we were all to recycle more, including flooring waste and that manufactures are to collect used flooring for recycling, they cant do that if you cant get it back to base for collection. So if you have cuts of carpet waste on the van and you recycle it does this not then become stock, an Item with value. We retain and re-use any boxes that come in and therefore the boxes are packing stock, if we bought new boxes it would increase costs and we would need to pay to have these old used boxes taken away.
