What does every1 fix thier ply with? I normally use 6mm or 9mm ply and staple it with an air tool, I have noticed sometimes the staples squeek, maybe only 1 or 2 over 30 m2 but does any1 have a better method. Please dont say ringshank it by hand. I have seen a tool that fixes ringshank nails like a stapler, does any1 use? any good?
I use a compressor/ air line gun, that uses coil fed ringshank nails.. Makes life WAAY easier Theres plenty around to buy, mines a boststitch one
Go onto the spotnails ltd website. It advertises on this site. They have a good nailer, compressor, carry box and kit currently at £499+VAT. We are nailing 600 sq mtr job at the moment and sticking down polyfloor xl after and there is no way I would risk stapples on plywood. Your just asking for problems if you do.
that looks like a good bit of kit, may have to be a late christmas present to myself. Do you know, what is the shortest nail you can use? can you use 20mm?
Yes i would, & have many times Depending on the gun you get/have, you can set the depth of countersink so that it doesnt go straight throught the ply and sits at the correct depth etc...
Whilst I wouldnt argue that ringshanks are the best fixing for ply it is also true that the use of divergent staples also complies with the CFA's reccomendations for sub-floor preperation. I dont fit ply all that often and when I do its mainly on domestic jobs and therefore when I was looking to buy a gun I opted for a stapler, if i were doing larger contract jobs with the meterage mentioned I'd definitly be getting a nailer. Cheers
I use ringshanks for permanents ie LVTs but dive staples i use for looselay (CDS)VINYLS and carpet overlays.
Uneven floors might not pull down as much with divergents and i wouldnt be able to sleep at night but i might be soft?.
Understand completely where your coming from bladerunner I just couldnt sleep at night if i thought the job wasnt done 100%
Another method is using a Paslode stapler. The staples are very heavy div points and no compressor and hoses to humph around. I use a 2hp x 6ltr compressor with my Hitachi nailer. The compressor is quite small and light compared to my old 1.5hp x 25ltr one. I've never had a problem with the nailer and it's cheap to use.
It's a Hitachi NV50AH technically it's shortest nails are 27mm but one of my flooring suppliers have 22mm and they work fine.I think they scoured Europe trying to get them at the right quality. I don't know if they send them out around the country but if anyone is interested I can ask.
Bostitch use flat coils which go down to 25mm. The only issue there is the nails would project about 2mm through the underside of 5.5mm ply and 18mm flooring although you'd be really really unlucky to hit something.
I hear you there Sandy If its floorboards i'll lift one and have a quick peek under, esp if its an old building and poss wouldnt follow building regs for the gap required between subfloor and any pipes/wires etc. If its chipboard etc on newer builds, then there should be absolutely no danger of hitting anything lol
